BEING OPEN MINDED

nobody understands how freeing it is to truly be what others call “chill.” that mindset is the most freeing of all, to not judge others upon first glance is a gift only few are naturally blessed with. of course, many learn how to be more accepting and carefree throughout life and experience, and that is to also be accepted. though what i have seen on other social media platforms is just exhausting. the key to being a truly open minded person is remembering it’s their life, not yours. people can live it and express themselves however they like as long as it doesn’t harm themselves and especially others. this can go from blue hair and piercings to dyed platinum hair and neon clothing. i used to call myself open minded until i realized it was only on one side. i was very accepting of alternative fashion and lifestyle that i absolutely ripped on things that are associated with the “norm.” i came to the realization that even though i choose not to live that way, that does not make it okay to tell people what they’re doing is wrong or stupid. they do it because it is THEIR life, i simply wouldn’t do it because that’s MY life and it does not align with me. this obviously goes further into topics of social issues and politics, though the first and most critical step to approaching deeper rooted misunderstandings regarding those topics would be the ability to properly argue. this should be basic knowledge, though tiktok and instagram (and media in general) is forgetting how to civilly debate. one must thoroughly hear out the other without insulting and/or interrupting, and then respond after the other has said their piece. active research of the points being discussed is crucial for all around understanding other perspectives. that advice goes for small arguments in comment sections to full on debates in professional settings. some may say this segment trailed off, though that only proves how far being open minded can get someone. we should not be closed off, calling things different to us “cringe” or dismissing others for their different ways of life.
TLDR/important takeaway: never judge anyone unless their way of life negatively affects themselves and/or others. when in disagreement, always put yourself in the other’s perspective and actively research.

I’ve been working on trying to resist internet pile-ons, and not in a contarian for contrarian’s sake way. I think it’s more interesting to find out what’s actually happening and search for context and perspective. There’s usually a lot more to each story and it leads to more interesting ideas and conversations. Allowing for more empathy and forgiveness toward others also ultimately leads to more grace for yourself when you make a mistake. Sometimes people are jerks and sometimes people say the wrong thing and sometimes people run with something without understanding what someone is actually saying. I’m resolving to look for nuance first before assuming the worst.

thinking critically about how we consume media + Learning from it

as someone who’s realized they are chronically online (i hate it trust me), i’ve realized that all the media consumption really has caused me brain rot lol.
with that being said, i’ve been trying to watch documentaries and movies that are normally out of my comfort zone to not only learn new things but also to help me with forming thoughts about *said* things because…sometimes i go with what people are saying online because a bunch of people are saying it (once again i hate it too trust me)
all this to say, dont knock something till you try it - it’s good for your brain and your soul to develop opinions

idk how i came across this in my daily wikipedia surfs, but something about this painting just amuses me so much.
my first impression was this looks fairly modern in a way, possibly because of the composition and how she made her features so light and bouncy. it oddly made me think of disney when i looked for longer. then i see it was made in 1909 😂
this painting can transcend times and i wouldn’t truly know when it was made unless i looked more closely at the objects around the subject. but even that can be a stretch as vintage items can be popular amongst anyone and they can just have their vanity setup look like this.
i tried looking for photographs of her online but alas nothing came up with certainty.

FIREFLIES OUTSIDE MY WINDOW

i saw something on here a day ago about how fireflies are disappearing and lightly catastrophized the scenario. but then as i regulated myself i looked up an article lightly extinguishing my concerns.
so as i look at the copious little flickers out my window, ill be glad to tell you that while firefly populations are decreasing, some firefly species are adapting to new environments trying to prosper and evolve. big causes for their decline are obvi climate change, urbanization, and light pollution. a simple way for you to not make things bad for the fireflies in your area is to not use pesticides on your lawns if you have them. they spend most of their lives in the ground so it starts at the soil.
additionally, every article i see with the salacious title about “last generation to see fireflies“ seems to be blocking out a lot of things about current firefly populations. most of the fireflies on the IUCN red list they keep mentioning are marked vulnerable or least concern. so there is a possibility a species or more of fireflies may disappear, but all of them i don’t think so.
