i listened to podcasts way too much last year. i always had a stranger yapping in my ear, sharing their thoughts and opinions and stories. i've come to the conclusion that this isn't good for the ol' brain! i now reserve podcast listening for a) when i'm doing chores and b) when i'm on the bus and i don't feel like reading (but NOT on my walk home from the bus stop.) yes, this means i don't catch every episode of every podcast i enjoy. but you really don't need to! you'll listen to the one's that actually interest you - the rest are just background noise which prevent you from being in the moment.

the perfect moment to pay a real attention to your podcasts, uninterrupted listen to your albums, eavesdrop on strangers. Traffic is none of your business.

i keep waking up in no mood to hear any music, podcasts, etc. and just focusing on the sounds of the commute. tune into that person mouthing off their lover on the phone. listen deeply to the screech of the subway as is settles into the station. embrace the sirens of passing emergencies. all are worth lending your ear to.

I saw a quote somewhere that read “Silence is the language of God,” and a couple of days later my AirPods finally stopped working. I interpreted this as divine intervention, and began experimenting with quiet in various scenarios and settings. I’m typically the type of person who has some sort of music/podcast/video/voice in their ears at all times, and frankly I believe it was stunting my ability to think freely and withstand discomfort. I was beginning to feel that I was almost cheapening the media I consumed by multitasking, and I am hoping to renew my imagination and sense of mindfulness/presence by developing a better relationship to Quiet. I am training myself to listen to the naturally occurring sounds of my own existence rather than drowning out the world all the time. So far so good.

for movies, u GOTTA watch may (2002), directed by lucky mckee. for tv shows, i recommend brand new cherry flavour on netflix. for books, i suggest boy parts by eliza clark, but if ur specifically looking for stories about adolescent girls, then her newer book penance might be more your speed. also rouge by mona awad, and motherthing by ainslie hogarth
