It’s like my ears are drinking tea filled with sorrow and beauty and some mystery

The whole song is fantastic in full but this part of the song always makes me tear up. Is it the hopeful but uncertain tone of the violin after 14 minutes of droning build? Is it the possibility to rise from the ashes? or the ability to recognize the beauty after the decay? I am not certain but when art like this affects so tenderly like this, it’s incredible. To lilt after the darkness? what does it mean? To dance regardless?

I’ve thought about this waaaaay too much. at the end of my movie, im old, completely alone, and dying of lung cancer. in the hospital, my heart flatlines. The nurse has left the room, busy with other patients. No one notices I’ve died. This song starts playing. the credits start rolling over the following scene: cut to me on a vast, empty road somewhere in rural idaho. a border collie leads me down the vacant road. she runs back and forth across the road, barking at me, telling me to keep following her. we are utterly free. no one but the two of us. i smile.

I’m sure you’ve seen it, but if it’s been awhile (it had been for me) I recommend a re-watch. My mom‘s husband had been politicking for its election as our annual x-mas watch for years and I was finally out-voted in its favor this year; I can admit I was wrong. I was near to sobbing by the end and its old-timey-ness did not detract from the incredible writing, pacing, and understanding of the human condition, rendering it - actually - time*less*.
