i think this is why this space is so special. nobody here is trying to go viral, people generally don't seem to gaf about likes. i don't even know how to view how many likes a rec has. people are just sharing things they think and things they love. it's so wholesome. it's like getting a special insight into someone's diary. virality is an unintended consequence, not the end goal – which is why everything feels so authentic. thanks for making this place so special. it's by far my favourite place on the internet 🙂‍↔️

one of the worst features of many social media apps i think is the ability to see like/follow counts, because even if you don’t care about it it’s still kind of shoved in your face on those apps and definitely in the dominant/popular culture there’s this perception of follows/likes are an achievement of some kind. i really like that beyond the straightforward trending users/recs feature (which rotates pretty regularly, plus i think it still captures the fun of being like “hell yeah this post is a banger”), there isn’t any way to tell what or who is “popular” or “successful” or whatever else on this app, nor any incentive to try to be those things as a user in general i just think it leads to more natural and genuine interactions between users, because the only thing we can see about each other is our little bios, mutuals, and our recs which are the whole point of being on here anyway! so thank you to the people making this app for making pi.fyi that kind of space through features like this!!

Just people sharing snippets of their life, recommending things they genuinely like, talk about things they dislike... it feels authentic compared to other platforms where everything feels like a show

funny enough, my final college essay was on what going to change the hospitality landscape (im a hospitality major) in the future. this was 2010 and my answer was social media apps but esp twitter. but to be fair instagram/tiktok/spotify/fb business pages/everything really didn't exist. it was the first time businesses like restaurants and hotels had a direct and public pipeline to the customers and guests. it was just facebook and twitter as the big players (we were already basically done with myspace 🥲) and foursquare was also a thing which was randomly big for hospitality! anyways, all that said here's some of my random thoughts. this actually feels a lot like those days. this def gives into the web2/web1 nostalgia. it also reminds me a lot of people just looking to connect over random thoughts. i don't know the rules here, if there even are any, but i've noticed that no one is selling anything and i haven't seen any aff links. it's as if there's a mutual respect to not "influencerize" the place, even though this place really is all about influencing reccs if that makes sense? sure there are the personal profule promos (and i do them too!) but those are different than what you see on social media and not ads or paid content. at the end of the day, i think this brings back the connection and nostalgia of what so many of us have craved online! it's also a fun way to get to know different people and even get to know their own personal brands and follow on other platforms. another interesting aspect is that it's a raw look into what our interests are. you can tell just by following / asks who is interested in what. and all the advice here is fun, kind, and honest, which i def can't say about other corners of the internet. interested to see what others have to say too! & shoutout the founders of this app -- i truly believe y'all created something special here <3

i don't think anyone ever intends to become a recreational ornithologist. but i've noticed that it definitely creeps up on you slowly in your mid-twenties. it starts with noticing how funny pigeons are, then learning pigeon lore, and suddenly you're feeding your neighbourhood birds every morning and buying books on birds. as a child i idolised the pigeon lady in home alone 2, and i woke up this morning and realised — i AM the pigeon lady 🐦

reading is a habit of building and developing your empathy and critical thinking skills. you’re forced to sit with an idea for however long you are reading it and forced to contextualise it and comprehend it within your own life and perspective. You can’t just scroll away or pause or put it on 2x speed. you have to sit with it. it’s super underrated, but genuinely I’ve made this a habit for the last year and feel like a totally different person. also you come out of it having learned something new or seeing the world in a slightly new way. I literally do not see any downsides to reading. make reading cool again! also you don’t have to do it in one big block, you can space it out — 15 mins here, 45 there — whatever works for you!

our cultural obsession with being perceived as cool is a disease. its peak capitalistic/consumerist propaganda. fuck being cool. like what you like and who cares if it's cool or not. it's tiresome and we need to leave it in 2024. literally nothing gives me the ick more than people who betray themselves in an attempt to be perceived as cool by the masses. be yourself — even if it means you're 'uncool'.
