Need I say more? When homes had personality and colour. When homes had patios and carefully thought out layouts. When intricate designs were a necessity and not a luxury or dubbed ‘quirky’.
When did we deem modern, bland, four-walled homes the superior options?
Bring back bay windows and grand porches, window art and unique doors, wrap-around patios and exterior and interior texture, fun wallpaper and fun furniture.

Currently house-hunting and so happy when I find one with brown tiles and yellow shagpile carpet or a coloured-brick entryway with some funky bathtub... some woodpanel wallpaper or stained glass. Fills me with joy to be in a place with some character and history and imagine which parts of it I could preserve if it was mine.

This is going to be rambly because I don't have the architectual terminology, but I'm a fan of homes that combine inside and outside. Open windows, covered patios. There are probably better examples of this style, but this scandi one in Seattle that got an NYT write-up is a good example. It's a little too modern for my taste, but this photo really captures the mood I'm going for. I've become more and more intrigued by handmade homes. The Craftsman Builder is an amazing book studying these kind of houses in the West.
Quincy Jones' home with its capacious living room and massive window/indoor trees has always spoken to me.
Generally I'm happy with lots of wood grain in the interior and I love a low and long midcentury ranch, especially if it's tucked in some ferns.

I already responded but this is a really big one. Homes used to be COZY!!!! My parents over the years have subscribed to the awful “magazine” style interior decorating like you see everywhere. They pulled out so many rugs and all the wallpaper. Fortunately they have a decent sense of decoration, our walls are covered in interesting things. Despite that the whole house used to be a lot more comfortable.. new style couches are awful and made to be looked at.. we have an island with awkward bar chairs that are uncomfortable and impractical.. I think this is an issue with new furniture in general, nothing is made for comfort. I miss having rug floors in my bedroom to lay on.. hardwood or tile is just not it.
