I enjoy a lot of Taika Waititi's work, WWDITS being one of my favorite films/series ever, but this movie really took me by storm when I first watched it. It's funny, emotional at times, and that Kiwi accent really takes me out with the some of NZ's unique humor.

When this came out in 2019 it wasn't really on my radar so I'm catching up to it late. I expected this movie (based on the trailer more than anything) to be a dark comedy about World War II, the politics of conflict and man's inhumanity to man. What I didn't expect was that it would be a low-key masterpiece. It goes from "satire" to "drama" in like a nanosecond. Scarlett Johansson is terrific here and the "kid actor" portrayals (typically I'm not a fan of child thespians, having grown up in L.A. around a bunch of damaged examples of this) are among the best I've ever seen. I can't recommend this movie enough. The music direction is incredible (I loved the inclusion of German-language versions of Beatles and Bowie tunes) and director Taika Waititi (who also portrays a slapstick Hitler here) has created a unique Venn Diagram where self-skewering humor and childlike innocence collide with the cynicism of the modern world. It won a bunch of awards but that isn't as important as the visceral takeout (and mind explosion) I had from watching this film.

I’ve actually posted about this at least once before on here and I don’t feel it got the love that it deserves. This is one of my favorite movies of all time. It is depth full, but also charming and funny. Stacked cast as well!

I really hate when people say “you should watch this, it’s so good”. Maybe it’s my natural oppositional defiance at play, but any time something gets hyped up, I want nothing to do with it. So I just finished watching Challengers, and yeah. It lives up to the hype. But I’m glad I came to that conclusion in my own terms, makes it easier to see a piece of work for what it is, without the influence of too many opinions.

Is when someone sends you a song they think you would like and they actually get it right, and then it goes into heavy rotation, and every time you listen to it, it makes you think about how they were thinking about you, and it’s like a tiny little love letter from the universe, letting you know that in one split second in time, you were in someone’s thoughts
