I, like most Americans, had never even heard of this man and yet I've been transfixed the last week. Yes, fun songs, but what has really imprinted on my soul (and I'm not even joking) is the album art specifically for Sing When You're Winning and Life Thru A Lens. While the rest of his discography is full of campy photoshop nightmares these two fucking POP. The lighting? The coloring? No fucking idea why but it clicks. And I swear this isn't any covert Better Man advertising, I hate CGI monkeys.

This entire album of Bowie covers, inspired by his appearance in The Life Aquatic, is really lovely โ€” but Life on Mars? is one of my favorites. Several years back, he toured through the U.S. playing these covers and it was magical โ€” especially when all of the Brazilians in the audience (and there were many) all sang along with him in Portuguese.

I had to do two, because I also really really really love this cover. I was big into Pop Goes Punk when I was a little emo kid, and this is one of a few covers that I think still sounds good outside of the Pop Goes Punk context.

Been stuck in my head all week, and it's technically 2 covers in a trenchcoat! + it has a great album cover! (I recommend checking out the artists behind the album art: * George Corsillo โ€“ art direction, design * Brian Hagiwara โ€“ front and back photography * Harry Langdon โ€“ photography of Luther Vandross They all had pretty different and pretty interesting artistic careers!)

While yes taking care of your favorite garments is a great practice, I'm talking about the band. Scratchcard Landyard was the track that sucked me in, and now I rock with Conversation, their cover of Oblivion, Hot Penny Day, and why lie, all the rest too. It's the one band I turn my brain from melody/beat mode to lyric mode for. Spoken word fucking rocks brothers
