I got into this like a year ago after someone on instagram put me onto it but they played at The Broadway in Brooklyn last weekend and I am truly sad that I didn't make it out to this one. This record is really good, worth listening to all the way through. Its intense at times but spacious at others and I really like how the production makes you feel like you are in the room they are playing it in. It sounds like a lot of stuff that you might like, like MJ Lenderman, Horse Jumper of Love, Greet Death or Knifeplay but it sounds like its own thing and its done well.

this new album is so great, somewhere between dijon, vampire weekend, wallows and probably some more accurate comparisons from people more in the know. production is immaculate but not annoyingly clean, the mix sounds bright and lovely. no idea what he's on about sometimes but there's a lot of lyrics about the pressure of expectations. if you were to give it a go i would say check out elevator hum which is the one i that got me to listen to the album in the first place. LET ME KNOW IF YOU LISTEN and thank me later - shredddie

this is the first album that i listened to that i felt would need multiple listens to fully sink in, and i'm still finding new things to love and it turns 10 this year. if you like depressing lyrics, rich production, and a seamless transition tracklist front to back, give this album a try. this album spoke to my sadboy highschooler soul

December is such a tragically dead month for new releases that it’s a rare gift to get an album this fucking good this late in the year. My friend Marcos sent me a link toĀ Heavy MetalĀ out of the blue a few days after it was released – I don’t always listen to what he sends me, and he knows that, but I’m so glad I went into this with a clear mind and open heart. It’s been ages since a first listen of an album hit me this hard. LyricallyĀ Heavy MetalĀ feels like what I always wanted from Dan Bejar but never quite got, and musically it almost feels like John Cale tried to rerecordĀ Paris 1919Ā from memory with a single microphone and a cracked Ableton rip. Or something like that? Mostly, it feels like a wholly original statement that can’t be contained, like someone finally letting go of any inhibition and confessing every private insecurity without fear. His lyrics teeter from darkly hilarious (ā€œlike Brian Jones I was born to swimā€) to bizarrely visceral romanticism (ā€œyou were born to break my big hairy football arms/like clean windows kill birdsā€) while regularly returning to the ultimate questions life has to offer: love, desire, purpose, God, you name it. It’s self deprecating without being self indulgent and immensely wise without ever feeling like an intellectual exercise. It’s an album that feels like too rich of a body of work to even properly engage with on the first several listens. Winter’s emotionality is so deep, so personal and so bizarre that it becomes universal – so relatable yet so exaggerated and disjointed that it borders on psychological horror. I’m going to be picking up on new things within these songs for a long time to come, and I suspect this album will stand out to me as one of the absolute best when I look back at the year.Ā

Its a web app that people submit 1 song per week and then everyone gets to vote on the all the different songs but their own. After all the rounds have been completed, the person with the most votes wins! Its a fun way to share music with people and get competitive. Been using this app with other online communities and friends for a few months and have really been enjoying it. NOTE: I created a PI.FYI League where the first submission is this friday. I limited it to 25 people for now not sure if I should open that up to more but it would be pretty overwhelming to have more than 25 songs to listen and vote on. The join link is attached to this rec!
