Youtube for sure, but any other site you can tell is burdened by nostalgia you don’t actually want to watch/see. A world where we simply ignore the explore pages and truly just see the stuff we choose to see doesn’t exist because of ads BUT at least now my list of subscriptions is shortish, actually searchable, and accurate to my taste. P.S. This rec also applies to the socials of people you knew in high school or college or some other weird phase of your long and varied life! We should be able to just move away and never be seen again without the assistance of a PI.

chronological feeds on social media are a dying breed and it's so important to maintain the ones you still have

Concentrate on accounts you follow, and expect to run out of things to look at. Avoid ā€œfor youā€ and ā€œsuggested posts/videosā€ - when you’re out of Following posts, you’re done :) People have said the internet is full of horrors, and I know that’s true, but I haven’t experienced it. That’s not to brag, just to show it’s possible! And I have spent my time on Tumblr, Reddit, pre-Musk Twitter, YouTube, instagram. Link goes to a post with specific advice for IG and YouTube. I don’t think Twitter can be used this way anymore, and you will have junk shoved into your feed no matter what. Maybe start fresh with new accounts to reset everything, too

1) i realized some time ago that alot of social media, with whatever algorithm they use, will try their best to push whats most popular to you. No matter if it’s positive or negative. So while Im on insta, I tend to delete the app and redownload it a day later when I catch them doing that. It’s like a mini reset but not really. But alongside that, i have made the conscious effort not to doomscroll and to dislike and report posts/comments/videos that are willfully harmful and spread misinformation. 2) i look back into the areas where i spent a lot of time online as a child when i didn’t have social media. And that place was Youtube and rewatching comfort shows and finding new outlets that don't trigger me. Sometimes that’s finding people online that only have like 5k subscribers. The other well known site that doesn’t have awful people on there is Pinterest šŸ˜‚ i never had an awful time on there outside of the ads 3) like i am the child of the house, i limit the content on my phone. On the Iphone at least you can set timers to how long you have been on an app each day and block certain websites.

I’m sick of feeling powerless so my new coping strategy is to not let a stupid system bully me into quiet despair. I’m learning how to use my state’s General Assembly’s online bill tracker and I’m subscribing to email updates for the agendas and the public hearings of the legislative committees I’m most concerned about. I’m memorizing all my legislatorsā€˜ names and emailing and calling regularly. Also: Check to see if your state’s Legislative Library has Libguides that explain in layman’s terms what bills are passing in your state and other educational/legislative resources you have freely available to you!!!

I’m up in my bank account every week writing every transaction out in a spreadsheet and I’ve never been better with money in my whole life. Also helped me notice asap when a whole mess of fraudulent transactions slipped in while I was occupied moving and otherwise wouldn’t have seen them for a while. It’s absolutely more effective than a Mint budget tracker because you have to confront EVERY purchase and contemplate what actually has value to you.
