Beautiful Scottish jangle pop album from the 1980s. “I Kiss the Flower in Bloom” is mesmerizing. Recommended if you like The Sundays, The La’s, Teenage Fanclub, etc.

New live CAN, from pretty late in their time as a band. They had recently added Rosko Gee as a bass player, so Holger Czukay is making experimental noises in the background. There's also a heady new release of an old Czukay collab with Brian Eno.

This may not be the first song I remember hearing, but it is one of the first I can recall having a visceral reaction to. My mom was an avid soundtrack collector of her favorite movies— The Lost Boys soundtrack often played in my house growing up. One day I was laying on my bed on a dreary afternoon and I remember hearing Jim Morrison’s voice floating up from the downstairs stereo. As he sang faces look ugly when you’re alone I stared into the small faces of the porcelain dolls on my shelf (that my mom insisted I keep on display even though they always made be slightly uncomfortable) until I imagined their faces warping and bending into strange expressions.

when i worked at the Apple Store / Genius Bar in college, we were trained on "assuming positive intent" from customers and peers. at the time, when i was a shithead 20-year-old, i thought this phrase was such bullshit. of course i can tell when someone has malicious intent, why not respond in kind! but now that i'm a bit older, i've realized the real wisdom behind the idea "assume positive intent" is that, when faced with interpersonal conflict, it's better to take the path of least resistance and keep your cool. for example, if i'm getting kind of annoyed with someone at work and i want to write a snarky email, i find it best to walk away from the keyboard and write my response when i'm feeling less activated. the result is that i can feel good about how i handle my feelings, i reflect better on other people, and i'm being an actual grown up. ;~)
