oh you’ve come to the right place mama!! going off the fact that you watch gilmore girls i’m gonna assume several wonderful things ab you and rec accordingly: short stories or memoir-like - great to dip in and out of but impactful enough to hold ur interest. love unaccustomed earth & the lowland by jhumpa lahiri, anything by david sedaris, anything by sheila heti (motherhood and how should a person be are faves), just kids by patti smith. the first books i ever truly loved were white oleander by janet finch and the glass castle by jeanette walls family drama (less quick) - hate to rec a little life by hanya yanagihara but it‘ll keep you off your phone! also loved pachinko by min jin lee, hello beautiful by ann napolitano, and my brilliant friend series by elena ferrante some great and gripping fiction: come and get it by kiley reid, now is not the time to panic by kevin wilson, tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow by gabrielle zevin, writers and lovers by lily king TWO ye olde recs: little women and the picture of dorian gray :))))

okay so i don’t think a lot of the books i had to read in school are that worth reading so if i had to recommend a high school reading list here’s what i’d include (based on my thoughts and also my book-ish jobs. some of these came out after i was in school but this is a theoretical list anyways): classics: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen; Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury; Frankenstein by Mary Shelley realistic fiction: Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson; The House On Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros; Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews fantasy and dystopia: The Hobbit by JRR Tolkein; The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins; The Giver by Lois Lowry historical nonfiction and autobiographies: An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States for Young People by Debbie Reese and Jean Mendoza / Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz; The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank; The Souls of Black Folk by WEB Du Bois; Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi graphic novels: Mis(h)rada by Iasmin Omar Ata; The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen; Maus I & II by Art Spiegelman (def read interviews with Spiegelman as well) plays: A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansbury; The Laramie Project by Moisés Kaufman poetry and prose: Ballast by Quenton Baker; Blue Horses by Mary Oliver; The Prophet by Khalil Gibran

i read 45 books in 2024 (brag) and i want to continue to prioritize reading in the new year, above tv or scrolling or gaming my biggest reading hack is to be reading 2-3 books at a time so whenever you wanna read you have something that can match your specific mood

as the old guy Kurt Vonnegut says: "I go down the steps and my wife calls, “Where are you going?” “Well,” I say, “I’m going to buy an envelope.” And she says, “You’re not a poor man. Why don’t you buy a thousand envelopes? They’ll deliver them, and you can put them in the closet.” And I say, “Hush.” So I go to this newsstand across the street where they sell magazines and lottery tickets and stationery. I have to get in line because there are people buying candy and all that sort of thing, and I talk to them. The woman behind the counter has a jewel between her eyes, and when it’s my turn, I ask her if there have been any big winners lately. I get my envelope and seal it up and go to the postal convenience center down the block at the corner of Forty-seventh Street and Second Avenue, where I’m secretly in love with the woman behind the counter. I keep absolutely poker-faced; I never let her know how I feel about her. One time I had my pocket picked in there and got to meet a cop and tell him about it. Anyway, I address the envelope to Carol in Woodstock. I stamp the envelope and mail it in a mailbox in front of the post office, and I go home. And I’ve had a hell of a good time. I tell you, we are here on Earth to fart around, and don’t let anybody tell you any different.”
