Definitely experiment with what's comfortable for you (English vs Continental knitting) and just try to get even tension as you're starting out. I recommend starting with scarves and hats so you can get the hang of knitting flat, knitting in the round, and purling. Pretty easy to work your way up to a basic sweater from there. There are a lot of great resources on YouTube for beginners as well (i think Very Pink Knits has all the basics).

Soooo until I made this scarf I freehanded EVERYTHING bc patterns seemed too difficult to read and I felt like I wouldn’t be able to adjust them without knowing The Rules. This scarf is super tiny and quick so it doesn’t feel like a daunting investment. There’s also a bunch of YouTube videos on simple open knit sweater/tops that could be helpful to following along on. getting comfortable freehand knitting made me more confident when approaching patterns when I decided to do that but I know for other people it can be the other way around ! One free hand tip I have is to get some circular needles that more or less correspond to the circumference of your belly and knit from bottom to top a tank top by experimenting with increases, decreases, and splitting the shirt at the armpits and finagling some straps.

so my mom is a knitting instructor and i’ve learned to knit and crochet with some of her help — highly recommend starting super simply and with each project adding on a new little thing! start with a scarf or even a washcloth is a great beginner project and learn basic cast on, knit stitch, cast off and just practice that first! take it slowly. i had such a hard time transitioning from crochet to knitting bc it is totally harder so take it slow and learn foundations and you’ll get to socks in no time.
