As a history major I get asked this question a lot and tbh I don’t think I would really want to travel back in time after studying about the past so much. We humans tend to over glorify the past a bit too much and the past is often crueler than we think. BUTTT I won’t mind checking out Elizabethan age

Like so many people, I never cared for history. It was always just a bunch of dates, cause-and-effect relationships, and names I had to memorize last minute before an exam. Now that I’m so many years separated from all that, I’ve finally found that I’m entering the pro-history phase of my life. I mean, it’s just so interesting. There’s such finite details available about everything, and sooo many different little niches with tons of resources equally as available as the obvious stuff. oh and it’s true, which is both terrifying and cool.

i read only one book about it, but i guess in a broader sense i find the history of time keeping and astronomy/logy(it was practically the same during most of history) really interesting. thinking about a time before light pollution, being able to see the milky way with the naked eye. etc.
one of my profs said that history is the story we tell ourselves about the past, and that the past (happened but) does not exist. that blew my mind a bit.

Yesterday I got into an argument with my father about whether we, in the current era can recreate am architectural masterpiece like kailasa temple and I told him that yes we can do it, it's just that it's too expensive now. This is a big issue with modern architecture in general. Architects would love to build a Roman or Greek or any classical style but it's too expensive and there are no skilled craftsmen nowadays. But we, at large ignore this point and it sometimes creates an illusion that the ancient folks had some "mysterious powers" or maybe aliens made the pyramids.
Yes, the ancients had a power that separates us from them. It was boredom. There was no Instagram back in the day or Netflix. They literally had nothing else to do other than to hone a craft. They would spend centuries building a single cathedral. We can do it too if we really want to do it. They weren't special it's just that the world back then was not controlled by greedy billionaires who would try to hijack our brain.
Even if there were sources of entertainment, they were accessible to the privileged and they were still grounded in reality.
