This was not a “I can’t put it down” kind of situation but it was a really rewarding read and it solidified my interest in speculative fiction and was among the books that made me a more ambitious reader.
If you liked The Word for World Is Forest (another highlight from my year, frankly) you will probably like this.

Fates & Furies - Lauren Groff, liked this a lot
The Fourth Wing series - fantasy has made it possible for me to get back to reading in the way that I used to when I was a kid. Just absolutely mainlining books. And it kinda makes me feel like a kid, too! But this series is FOR SURE not for children lol 👀
The Southern Reach trilogy - now a quartet! Next on my TBR is the new installment, Absolution. Really hoping for some answers but sheeesh this series is mysterious and gorgeous. Super weird science fiction.
Birnam Wood - I attempted to start this and didn’t like the first couple chapters. Has anyone read and can you tell me if it’s worth it?
Song of Achilles and Circe - stunning, gorgeous, obsessed, loved. I think I preferred Circe but SoA really had me sobbing lol.
The Shadow of What Was Lost - book 1 in a trilogy by James Islington. Picked it up because I loved The Will of the Many and the second isn’t out yet. I’d say not even close to as good as TWOTM but still an entertaining read. Will likely pick up the second from the library soon.

I read this on the beach last weekend (an unhinged choice) but I just couldn’t put it down. Fantasy without a whiff of Tolkien.

a lot like if ao3 had more of a focus on original works - started reading a 205-chapter scifi/urban fantasy/slice of life kinda deal on there and got sixty chapters in overnight, i literally couldn't put it down to sleep it was that good. i've never been super into scifi or heavy worldbuilding fantasy because they usually overwhelming you by infodumping about a million bits of lore all at once but this story? so well written, feeds you the information really well through the story, beautiful characterisation and character interactions, funny and horrifying and heartwarming and just.... ahhhh i'm just so glad i found it! i'm very excited to start checking out even more works on there now, it's independently what got me back into reading original works
