I think about this film so often, I don’t know why. I don’t think it’s a very good film, in fact in parts it is actively bad, but it is one of my favourite films because it clearly had some kind of big impact on me! I have rewatched it a few times and (other than being visually pleasing) I still can’t figure out why i love it or why it takes up such precious brain space.

This movie is so incredible. I had to watch it for my Behavioral Neuroscience class (funny I know), and I sat in my little room watching it on my laptop. There was a purpose to us watching it for class, we were discussing memory and read a review article about episodic memory systems (think the MTL). Every one of the actors was so fantastic. I don’t want to directly spoil anything, but it was nice to watch that rollercoaster of emotions and come away with the conclusion that love transcends things like memory. In fact, research has found that people with anterograde and retrograde amnesia, even if they cannot directly remember the person that they love, still love them and experience that love. Clive Wearing experienced profound memory loss and the inability to form new memories due to encephalitis. But he still remembered how much he loved his wife, Deborah, and often times she was the only one that could bring him joy. He was able to lead a fulfilled life because he still had that love. So, if you’re like my boyfriend and worry about some crazy illness or accident causing your loved one to lose their memory entirely, think of Clive and Deborah, and think of this movie, and know that you will still be loved even if they cannot remember you.

One of my favorite movies atp every time I re watch it it blows my mind they were able to create such a clever timeline of events. the movie is depressing yet inspiring, and just an amazing film. I can not get enough of it it’s literally amazing I can’t even properly express in words how much I love it.

Today's eclipse brought this movie to mind, easily my favorite Weerasethakul and maybe my favorite film depending on the day. Haunting and healing is kinda his whole thing but I find Syndromes to be the most so, truly a trance I never want to end. Would you believe me if I told you one of cinema's most unnerving moments is a slow zoom into a pipe? "No matter what people do, no matter what we do, something always watches us. Like you coming here... it knows all about you. I know as well"

I used to be envious of people who had ā€œMySpace friendsā€ or ā€œtumblr friendsā€. Now I have PI.FYI friends. Thank you capyboppy for your lovely letter and this illustration of a capybara and a mouse with fruit on our heads, it made me weirdly emotional ā¤ļø
