Coming to this comment section for catharsis after finally watching it today ā˜¹ļøAs a sex worker/former fs sex worker I’m honestly disgusted that people are calling this a humanist portrayal. Ani’s humanity (outside of her willingness to defend herself) isn’t explored at all, and the idea that the break in/assault scene has been described by professional reviewers as a ā€hilarious slapstick crescendoā€œ makes me want to vom. Sean Baker needs to sit down. If he’s so fixated on us (or as he would probably say: ā€œpassionate about telling the stories of sex workersā€œ) maybe he should just fund art made by actual sex workers.

Some nice cinematography, but James Gray's Two Lovers was way more true to the class tensions of Brighton Beach despite starring frickin' Gwyneth Paltrow

I was :/ i expected it to balance the plotā€˜s mad, trashy, hyperreal, hilarious odyssey through the city with a deep emotional core in the way that Tangerine does, but Anora is soooo surface level in comparison - the characters are so hastily sketched in comparison to his other films, it feels more like a comedy/thriller rather than a drama.

The only other Sean Baker I've seen is Florida Project. And I would rather rewatch Florida Project over Anora. Still think it is a excellent movie tho

I agree. It loses steam mid way. lacks the charm of Tangerine.
