The only definitive feature of being goth is liking goth music and the only definitive feature of goth music is being music goths like. I went to a goth wedding this past Halloween and they hit us with a tasteful and crowd pleasing range including the Cramps, the Cure, Depeche Mode, and the Monster Mash. Maybe the only other relevant component of being goth is arguing about what music is and isnāt goth. Itās built-in conversation to engage new friends at the gay barās goth night you bravely attend alone.
A couple years into your goth conversion and your clothes have an effortless harmony (they all match), you stand a couple inches taller (big shoes), and you know the delirious joy of a dark smoke filled room packed with people singing and dancing and kissing and doing erotic aerial hoop performances to Boys Donāt Cry at 2 in the morning.

This perfect band (aesthetically, sonically, historically) epitomizes what I call Lounge Goth, an underrated fusion. The first time Danny ever talked to me, it was at a party called FIST (Fun Is Still Transgressive) and it was because I was wearing a MLWTTKK shirt. I would say if you know you know, because somehow everyone looks confused when I bring up this group (āKooler Than Jesusā? āA Daisy Chain 4 Satanā? Anyone??), but they were a live act inĀ The CrowĀ and featured on the soundtracks forĀ Cool WorldĀ andĀ ShowgirlsĀ so, I mean, come on.

Iām sick of feeling powerless so my new coping strategy is to not let a stupid system bully me into quiet despair. Iām learning how to use my stateās General Assemblyās online bill tracker and Iām subscribing to email updates for the agendas and the public hearings of the legislative committees Iām most concerned about. Iām memorizing all my legislatorsā names and emailing and calling regularly.
Also: Check to see if your stateās Legislative Library has Libguides that explain in laymanās terms what bills are passing in your state and other educational/legislative resources you have freely available to you!!!

Iām up in my bank account every week writing every transaction out in a spreadsheet and Iāve never been better with money in my whole life. Also helped me notice asap when a whole mess of fraudulent transactions slipped in while I was occupied moving and otherwise wouldnāt have seen them for a while. Itās absolutely more effective than a Mint budget tracker because you have to confront EVERY purchase and contemplate what actually has value to you.
