There are many good reasons to give up alcohol but one finally pushed me to taking the leap: sleep. Even a beer or two will leave me tossing and turning all night, and I value a good nightā€™s rest too much. Iā€™ve moved to drinking a variety of alternatives and I really havenā€™t looked back since. Itā€™s been months since Iā€™ve switched and the benefits of not drinking have far outweighed what Iā€™ve given up. Athletic Brewing Company has become my beer of choice because itā€™s the first Iā€™ve found to actually taste like beer, but I also have this great cocktail recipe book called Zero Proof. Thereā€™s a jalapeƱo cocktail in this book that is truly out of this world.

do people even like drinking anymore? that stuff 10 years ago was the coolest thing and we couldn't wait to thursdays to get to the student nights in the bars in town. everyone now seems to dig being healthy which is cool but there's so much stories and situations i have gotten into thanks to drink and would hate for folk to miss out on that stuff. but here i am, 28 yo and thinking it's time to stop. a beer now costs way to much and i am spending like 100 on a night just to wake up depressed, anxious, fatter, and broker? what's up with that??

The first half was tough and second half is rewarding. Iā€™m sleeping through the night and craving weird shit like smoothies and salads. 6pm to 10pm feels like forever but then I get home from the bar after drinking five 0% beers and feel dope. Best paired with Sober January.

I meant to post this yesterday. Absolutely beautiful morning for walk. This morning is also beautiful but in a spring rain kind of way.

Prescriptive gender is a prison. Rather than gender being a form of self-expression, gender is treated as a pass/fail test for how well you can conform to cultural expectations. Since I was young, I remember feeling a great deal of pressure to conform to these expectations around what ā€œmenā€ are meant to be. You like sports, cars, womanizing, aggression, and not having feelings. I felt so distant from this ideal. I was sensitive and shy, and I preferred spending my time being creative in some way For a long time, I felt like I was failing at ā€œbeing a man.ā€ In many ways I was! Because I didnā€™t need toĀ bea man. All I needed to be was myself. Itā€™s taken me a long time to separate myself from prescriptive gender, sharpening in on which aspects of masculine energy I identify with and which I donā€™t. Iā€™m not done yet. Maybe I will never fully be. The self continues to evolve over time, and I suspect aspects of my gender will too.
