all you need is like 1-2 pages of text on paper, sometimes less. works every time. i used to swear by fiction but lately i’ve been reading a lot of ā€œhard booksā€ for example Concerning the spiritual in art by wassily kandinsky and Memories dreams reflections by carl jung and i think these work even better for sleepiness in the way they make me feel too stupid to be awake. blue light from the phone/laptop etc will kill you

I have always read in bed before lights out, until having a phone ruined all that. Ever since my phone became my alarm clock (several years ago), things have gone steadily downhill. But! I’m trying, and the last few months have reminded me why I love finishing my waking hours tucked in with a book. Recent highlights: The Yellow House, The Vanishing Half, Crying in H Mart, Animal, Three Women, and My Year of Rest and Relaxation.

re read your favorite book from when you were a kid read true crime or celebrity biographies or romance novels as the other rec said, read short books! I did this for a year and it helped me so much to get back into the practice of reading go to the library and check out three or four books— don’t buy them so you don’t feel guilty if you cant get through one go outside with a book when it’s sunny, it’s harder to see your phone screen in the sun, and reading outside is both a big flex and a great joy I have a personal rule about screens in bed outside of specific times which helps me read instead of scrolling if I want to lie down for a bit It does take a little bit of practice to get it reincorporated back into your routine but it’s easier if you love it !

when I was getting back into reading more regularly, I started with novellas and short stories because it felt less overwhelming. even now, if I get out of the groove of reading, I find something short that will motivate me and get me back into reading my main book another thing Ive done is invested in an e-reader because an issue I had was keeping focus because of a screen time issue and I was able to satisfy that part of my brain itching for my phone but making it more productive lol. not sure if that's something you're experiencing but it was my biggest issue I had to work around at first the last thing that helps me is setting up the right vibe to read. in the last few months, Ive been reading a lot of Russian literature so I put on my playlist of older russian and soviet music, maybe light a candle, whatever Im feeling, and just let myself get into it. obviously not a necessity but I always like some quiet music in the background while I read also seeing this ask made me remember I need to read before bed tonight so thanks for that lmao

ok there’s this one line i think about all the time, i’m gonna paraphrase because i left my copy of the book at the studio, but it’s like ā€œSooner kill a child in its cradle than nurse un-acted upon desiresā€ this sentence is constructed clumsily and it’s soooo dramatic but i adore the sentiment. i don’t want to see any of you little bitches nursing desires without attempting to realize them. boring!!!!! follow your desire to the best of your ability even if you lack talent or time or tools or whatever. constant birthing girlies!!! no calcification!!!
