If I've ever talked with you about music, we've probably talked about LUCY. The ultra-prolific Western Mass cult hero has been the most important artist in my life for the past seven years. In 2024, he released three albums. Beyond that, he's cooking on at least four active side projects. In my book, everything he releases is required-listening. So it would be impossible to choose a true favorite. The depth of LUCY's catalogue is one of the special things about his work. But I narrowed it down by focusing on his last release: Cooper B. Handy's Album Vol. 9. This one is dense -- a lotta gems. Here's a playlist of all the vol. 9 songs I really hope you'll listen to. Among those, "Folk Song" stands out. I'm obsessed with the switch-up from the verse to the chorus. Every day, I walk around with a million LUCY lines floating in my head. This song has a bunch of them: Who you gonna call when the levee runs dry? Said fuck the cops -- cuz they got the wrong girl and they got the wrong guy You got a thing for the world I can see it in your eyes Said fuck the cops -- cuz they got the wrong girl and they got the wrong guy They put him in the ground and I see him in the sky I got a thing for the world you can see it in my eyes. Money -- people kill for that money ... Who you gonna call when you wanna know why? They put you on hold, and you watch another day go by

His eyes are blueberries, video screens Minneapolis schemes and dried flowers From books half read The juice of dark cherries cover his chin The dog walks in and the crow lies in his jaw like lead Everything eats and is eaten, time is fed

The story behind my relationship with this song is probably not all that interesting… but discovering it was a real cathartic experience for me. I first heard this song when I went to see The Caretaker perform live at the Lincoln Center and I think he performed a chopped up version of it… I knew I recognized the melody from somewhere, but I was too timid to pull out my phone and Shazam it mid-show. Weeks go by, I’m still thinking about what that damn song was… I surf through The Caretaker’s discography. Nothing! I start sending voice memos to my musically inclined friends, humming how the melody went… nothing! Was I making up the existence of this song? Was I going insane? I saw Jon Rafman’s amazing short “Punctured Sky” where this exact thing happens to his protagonist (obsessing over a video game that he thought existed but no one could help him find it)... it had my number written all over it. I gave up and moved on with my life. But then, about a week or so ago, I was listening to Helena Deland’s new album while doing the dishes and I heard it again… a familiar melody… briefly interpolated on the song “Drawbridge.” But what was it?!  No comments on YouTube helped get to the bottom of this musical mystery.  I sent it around frantically to all my friends. Ari Balouzian, who does the scores for my films, is a massive Midnight Cowboy fan and was able to identify it after a bit of trial and error. He sent me the Santo & Johnny cover (amazing in its own right)... and finally, after searching around on YouTube… I found it! A haunting piece of music, and the recording itself sounds so… brittle… that it almost adds an extra oomph to the aural sensation of bliss when you listen to it.

Chaos and madness, thousands and thousands of samples strung together in a dream. You can play it track by track or just let it run as one big song — it is entirely unique in sound and style and feeling.

Ingredients: 🍞 1 loaf flat Turkish bread (but really, any bread) 🧄 1 garlic clove 🍅 1 tomato (dealer's choice) 🧀 1 fresh mozzarella (the one in water, burrata if you're feeling ✨fancy✨) 🫒 Extra virgin olive oil 🌿 Basil 🧂 Salt Method: 1. Slice that bread, toast it in your favourite way (I go face down in a pan until crispy inside, soft outside). 2. Cut the garlic in half and rub it all over the bread for a *touch* of garlic flavour. 3. Grate the tomato (I use a cheese grater) and spread on the bread in a thick layer. 4. Slice up the mozzarella into discs and place on top of tomato. 5. Basil and olive oil to taste. Salt if you want the salty. Optional, but delicious additions I've tried: - Thinly sliced prosciutto - avocado - any kind of pickles - roast peaches - dukkah - leafy greens - eggs of any kind Can also be: - a fun caprese salad sans bread - a solid sandwich - a bruschetta if you make it 🤏 tiny

The cold wind on my face, blown in from the slit of the taxi window is bliss — a silver lining that smells like Paris and freedom from the stale plane air. My head rests in the nook between the car seat and window bathing in it.
