Saw this last night at the Roxie in SF. Phenomenal performances, beautiful and unsettling photography, a story that feels both primordial and also way ahead of its time. I’ll never look at tall grass the same.

I’m including this because it’s a vaguely unapproachable art film and I hope you’re impressed that I liked it. I saw it at Metrograph in January. Dreams consists of eight vignettes, each inspired by real recurring dreams from Kurosawa’s life. It was made late in his career and is described by Metrograph as “the work of a filmmaker with nothing left to prove but a great deal to say.” (I’ve been thinking about that phrasing ever since I read it.) I hate to sound like a frat boy but I was on mushrooms when I saw it and I am going to have to recommend that. I’ve never seen the uncanny nature of dreams captured so well.

private screening at my favorite independent theater this weekend...by chance, not design. obsessed w Kei Fujiwara, industrial soundtrack by Ishikara Chu, and the choppy experimental editing....going to get really into cyberpunk and body horror now

Animated psychological horror. There is one scene with a simulated rape (protagonist is acting in a tv episode). Even so, it’s unsettling. See also Magnetic Rose.

Not every idea is a good idea. But maybe a small part of it is, or maybe it can grow into one, or maybe it will lead to the next good idea, or maybe you just need to get all those lousy ideas out of the way so the good ones have room to breathe. Or maybe it just feels good to write and this fixation on good vs bad ideas is the thing that’s in the way.

Recommending this for myself because I never do it but when I do it always helps me get what’s inside outside.
