It’s a short story collection by Joyce, so it’s already a classic. But I found it really poignant in its structure, and feel like it’s the type of thing everyone could find something in. Plus, it’s just a palatable way to read Joyce without picking up Ulysses sooooo

i'm not sure if you consider more recent classics but as a lit major here are some of my faves that could be considered classics: wuthering heights, pride and prejudice, song of solomon, the crying of lot 49, slaughterhouse five, 1984, hamlet, macbeth, and it's not a novel but the collected short stories of ernest hemingway... many of them are bangers. i'm not a hemingway novel fan but his short stories are often so good

I just finished it a few months ago for my book club that reads Carribbean books - it was a big hit even for those who don't usually like short stories.

The literary equivelant to an Edward Hopper, Hemingway has enraptured readers with his terse yet evocative use of the written word. Each story is a kaleidoscope, his utilization of omission works in a hypnotizing and atmospheric effect. Hemingway moves from Saharan hunts brimming with sun-beating, murderous intensity to Spanish civil wars and cloudy French metropolitans. “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber” is one of many stories which have stuck with me, and the book will stick with you after the last word and long after the turn of the final page.

maybe not radical honesty, but like.. just living. like, twirling strangers in the dance hall because it feels right and skipping down the grocery aisles and sitting down and writing for yourself in public and having fancy ginger beer for breakfast and talking unabashedly. yknow??? maybe this is common sense but i’ve found peace again
