I have a love hate relationship with my phone. I have to have two because work and I hate how much these dumb bricks control my attention and my life. I yearn for the days when humans weren't so easily accessible 24:7 and for a time when getting back to someone in 1-2 weeks was perfectly normal and not considered ghosting or flaky. on the reverse side, instant access to culture, memes, movies, music yada yada but still.

For as long as I can now remember, my integrity and my relationship to myself have steadily atrophied as a result of endless scrolling. I got a new phone recently and due to a clerical error, I was locked out of instagram. This allowed me to devote my old phone (which I now call my “bad phone”) exclusively to social media access. My pain levels have reduced 800%.

We live in complex times regarding our relationship to technology, we have already reached a tipping point regarding the geographical, ecological, and social impact of technology, thus looking for alternatives regarding these technologies, both the hardwares that rely on slavey and mining, and the softwares, mostly controled by oligarchies that drive an economy based on spoliation, and have clear right wing political inerests, is not only an interesting personal choince, but a political commitment as well. However, it is important to understand that these are tools, and sometimes we veer towards a fetishistic aproach toward this topic. Physical media is pretty cool, but having a nice HD with movies you downloaded can be as good as having a collection of dvds, or what seems more concious regularly fixing your smartphone or this wave of buying "dumb" phones. The way you interact and use these technologies is truly what matters. Why should you use your phone less if your goal is to keep in contact with important people in your life? Using your phone for 3 hours because you have been chatting with friends is different than using it the same time doomscrooling. You can use your messaging app, and block apps or straight up delete apps that you believe are unhealthy for you. Phone time is a quantative number, but you can have a qualitative approach to it. I apologize if this sounded a bit ranty. I hope you can keep in touch wth your dear friends through many ways, and if the phone is accesiable to all of you, I would say why not? I reccomend using Signal as a messaging app hihi

recently turned off (mostly) all immediate lockscreen notifications bc nothing is ever that important. only phone calls, facetimes, libby, and classpass allowed thru. i also like to schedule notification summaries so my phone tells me just once a day what PI.FYI notifications i’ve collected or what the Pattern app predicts heading my way, astrologically speaking. it’s nice and doesn’t hold my attention for long. pros: seeing texts pile up and feeling like most popular girl in the world, no twitchy reaction everytime phone lights up bc now i know its one of four things, incredible renewed ability to FOCUS on reading or drawing or literally anything else, not being pulled into depths of phone as much cons: was trying to sell a chair and accidentally ignored this poor sweet girl for days, even on the nights she was free to pick up chair…like just forgot ab it… thankfully she just showed up and conversed w my roommate like olden times and i was hollered at while watching Love is Blind i’m also switching to greyscale so it makes everything look boring. i need all the help i can get i’ll be so fr this wretched device!!!!

reading is a habit of building and developing your empathy and critical thinking skills. you’re forced to sit with an idea for however long you are reading it and forced to contextualise it and comprehend it within your own life and perspective. You can’t just scroll away or pause or put it on 2x speed. you have to sit with it. it’s super underrated, but genuinely I’ve made this a habit for the last year and feel like a totally different person. also you come out of it having learned something new or seeing the world in a slightly new way. I literally do not see any downsides to reading. make reading cool again! also you don’t have to do it in one big block, you can space it out — 15 mins here, 45 there — whatever works for you!

i don't think anyone ever intends to become a recreational ornithologist. but i've noticed that it definitely creeps up on you slowly in your mid-twenties. it starts with noticing how funny pigeons are, then learning pigeon lore, and suddenly you're feeding your neighbourhood birds every morning and buying books on birds. as a child i idolised the pigeon lady in home alone 2, and i woke up this morning and realised — i AM the pigeon lady 🐦

our cultural obsession with being perceived as cool is a disease. its peak capitalistic/consumerist propaganda. fuck being cool. like what you like and who cares if it's cool or not. it's tiresome and we need to leave it in 2024. literally nothing gives me the ick more than people who betray themselves in an attempt to be perceived as cool by the masses. be yourself — even if it means you're 'uncool'.
