More broadly, read what you are interested in.
I’ve gotten into reading again this year and it clicked more with me when my friend who is a big reader gave me this advice. I started by reading two books David Fincher adapted, Gone Girl and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Since then, I have read a Elmore Leonard book, who wrote Jackie Brown, and more light sci fi and magical realistic which lines up with my movie taste.

buck_mcgraw based on your post i think you might like them! annihilation is a sci-fi thriller, it’s pi.fyi popular (lol) and while the movie sucks (even the author hates it), the book is kinda cinematic and definitely invokes the same uneasiness you might get watching something like gone girl (or perhaps zodiac, another good fincher!). hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy is sci-fi and also a movie (but good), the book itself is a little different but equally, if not more, funny. a lot of the humor is dry and tongue-in-cheek. it’s a series but you don’t have to read them all but either way start with the first one. and it’s more of a fun read rather than suspenseful, but still very enjoyable

Try reading essay collections or autofiction. It feels more similar to something you’d read online. Also don’t just look up “best books” and stick yourself with something challenging right off the bat. Read something exciting and fun: Steven King, Ira Levin, basically the types of books that get turned into movies.

The movies and books I have been reading are fire. There's something so satisfying about knowing what you like and don't like

I know a couple people who got back into reading because of her. I really like her books and find that they can help you narrow down what exactly it is that you like in a book (do i like fiction? Do I like books about relationships? Do I like contemporary lit? etc) and afterwards it’s easier to pick more things to read.
Id start with Normal People which was also made into a great show as well so you can watch that after the book.

Just because I see a window to get across the street doesn’t mean you don’t have to look both ways. I’ve been on the other side of that though

I met Erin (@RIOTGRRRL) and Jake (@SLOWDAZZLE) last year after I started using PI.FYI—we organized a meetup before a Jonathan Richman show and immediately clicked over our shared taste in music and similar sensibilities. We started hanging out a lot and had some great times together. I’ve also gotten to know many of their friends, who are all really cool. Erin and Jake started dating a couple of months after the three of us became friends, but our group chat still pops off. Their friendship has meant a lot to me, especially since moving to NYC in 2023, and I really appreciate having them in my life.
