Make sure you have some idea of why you want to do grad school. Don't just do it because you feel you need to, or want a distraction. And if your program requires a thesis/dissertation, make sure you are really passionate about the subject. Like, as passionate as the people who make three-hour video essays are.

Iā€™m actively pursuing a PhD right now, so for me itā€™s a yes, but Iā€™ve had two friends drop from their respective PhD programs in the three years Iā€™ve been in mine and for them itā€™d be a hell no. You have to be really honest with yourself and take the decision seriously, but if you feel there arenā€™t much stakes (for instance you get into a fully funded program or get scholarships/fellowships) then Iā€™d say itā€™s worth a shot. I would never recommend grad school if youā€™re only doing it to ā€œtake a break from the real worldā€ or something like that, but if getting a specialization in something would help you meet personal or professional goals, then itā€™s probably gonna be worth it for you.

iā€™m not in grad school/havenā€™t applied for other reasons, but a big piece of advice my v wise mentor/professor in college about grad school was that she really stressed not going into debt for grad school, especially in todayā€™s world and job market. so even if you arenā€™t sure youā€™d 100% ā€œuseā€ it, if itā€™s with scholarships and a fellowship so you graduate debt-free, worry less. on the other hand, even if youā€™re very sure you would ā€œuseā€ it but youā€™d have to go into debt seriously ask yourself if itā€™s that worth it. if you only want a masterā€™s (in the US), there are not always as many fellowships / assistantships for masterā€™s students so go for a PhD program with a ā€œterminal masterā€™sā€ so you can do two years, decide if you like it, and if you donā€™t you still get a masterā€™s at the two year mark (this was also advice i received). my obvious caveat is that iā€™m not in grad school (yet?) but iā€˜d literally trust this professor with my life so i trust that this advice is sage enough to pass on!

better yet, find a dual degree program and get two at once. postpone student loan payments, get a superiority complex, and study something you're genuinely passionate about in a way that reflects your passion. lord it over your family that doesn't believe in you. whenever anyone asks what you do you can always say "oh i'm in grad school" and they say "oooooh what are you studying?" and then you get to tell them your complex thesis idea and they are amazed. it's fun. i swear.

One of the few apps with no ephemeral "story" feature or whatever so you don't need to check it every 24 hours. Cherish this.

It's just like John Swartzwelder said: "Since writing is very hard and rewriting is comparatively easy and rather fun, I always write my scripts all the way through as fast as I can, the first day, if possible [ā€¦] Then the next day, when I get up, the scriptā€™s been written. Itā€™s lousy, but itā€™s a script. The hard part is done."
