I've been doing a lot of live drawings at shows, this one is of Juvenile and Mannie Fresh when they played at Brooklyn Bowl to celebrate the 25th anniversary of "Back That Azz Up." They had a live band with them and the energy was so hype! His son messaged me "My dad love the painting" and got my email so I'm hoping this ends up in his house one day :) Musicians are my main muses. I sell the drawings as fine art prints and because they are ink on paper, the replicas look pretty identical to the OGs. Live drawing is a practice I've devoted myself to out of not having a studio and living out of a storage unit and it's made me brave and remember that MFA degree and Art World aside, art is about curiosity, creativity, openess, innovation, and being present to the beauty in front of you. It is the conscious action to make marks, to trust the ancient technology embeded in our bodies, to allow a picture to reveal itself, and connect to some kind of truth on the daily.

I love the focus of everyone in the room, for 5, 10, 20 minutes at a time everyone is just there, observing and drawing. I do it only for me, it is not for a class and it is not a skill I am in desperate need of improving. I make work, some good some bad, and I enjoy the act of making and the grounding it gives me. I like the vulnerability of the space, there is no hiding the work youāre making.
As an architecture student I do not trust the art students who do not come to the open figure drawing sessions, like what are you scared of?

drawing from life is always preferable to drawing from a flat image on a screen. learning how to draw the human body from life will help you to wrap your end around all kinds of shapes in 3 dimensions, around line, around light and shadow, around personality and expressiveness. itās a great way to meet people, itās meditative, itās academic, itās fun, it can only make you a better artist. being on the modeling side of these sessions has also given me a new perspective on the process, on what helps people and what doesnāt. most fun and fulfilling side gig iāve ever had

I am obsessed with this Art Deco Extraordinaire, a Polish-born painter whose glamorous figurative compositions came to life in 1920s-30s Paris. Influenced by Cubism and Neoclassicism, her worksāespecially her portraits of womenāblend beauty, strength, modernity, and a timeless cosmopolitan flair. After leaving Paris, she continued her career in New York, Hollywood, and Mexico. Now on view is her first American retrospective at the de Young Museum in San Francisco until February 9th.
