communicating boundaries instead of ghosting ppl

i’m still supportive of ghosting in general as a method for distancing urself from ppl who absolutely suck, but i was personally tired of having it be basically the only trick i have for pulling back… tried this wild thing called “talking” over the weekend, and it’s the craziest thing… ppl listened to me!

not ghosting

There is no quality a person can possess that is more vital than the ability to have an uncomfortable conversation. Too many people these days take the easy route of ignoring- whether it be with dating, business or friends. However, I firmly believe it is our responsibility to be honest, direct and compassionate with the people in our lives- no matter how uncomfortable or inconveniencing. Tldr: answer ur goddamn emails people!

like, if you don’t know the person well? it’s kind of like ghosting, right? kind of shitty but not like… that bad? maybe if you frame it like…. “i’m not going to justify that with a response“ or “i’m really upset with you and don’t want to talk” or even “i need space for myself” imo it’s the complete lack of communication that makes the silent treatment shitty. if you’re clear with your intentions and what you want/why you’re doing it then it’s less of a punishment for the other person and more of you setting boundaries.

listening for the last word of someone’s sentence

as a chronic interrupter (i’m an east coast gemini theater kid jew ... it’s in my nature i’m SORRY) this advice actually blew my mind. because i’m usually waiting for the person to /make their point/ before i respond. but waiting for the last word? that’s new! that’s actionable! because sometimes someone makes their point, but then by the end of the sentence they totally pivot. and it’s good to let them figure that out. think of it less as patience (boring, hard), and more as leaving space for wildcard additions (fun, intriguing)
