Stax Records and Volt Records, sister labels from Memphis Tennessee, were the Motown contemporaries and competitors who helped create the sound of American RnB and southern soul music in the late 50s and 60s. Booker T. & the M.G.s were the house band. Ottis Redding was their biggest star, and they recorded Wilson Picket, Sam and Dave, and Albert King, along with many other rnb, gospel, soul and blues greats. But the best thing about this nearly 11 hour compilation is all the near-forgotten gems on it. It’s all singles, and it sounds like it.

In my 2020 Spotify Recap, Al Green was my number one most listened to artist. He is the king of “set it and forget it” - you never once have to press skip on his Spotify radio. If I had to choose, his album Let’s Stay Together is one of my favorites (along with Kind of Blue (1959) by Miles Davis). I’ll stop writing here because I would prefer you play the album while you read the rest of this newsletter.
