Hey Bennys mom can you give some insight into if I should get a dog moving into a one bedroom with a yard but not fenced? I’ll be mostly virtual but everyone’s telling me not to get the responsibility so young but I think my mommy hormones are kicking in and I want a Baby and a bff and the shelter near the apartment is overflowing rn

imkhushi this is such a tough question… I got Benny as a puppy when I lived in a tiny one bedroom apartment with a fenced dog park on site. It was honestly pretty miserable because Every… Time… I took him out I had to put on clothes to take him and I would run into neighbors and have to talk to them. Which socialized me but was really irritating after a while. And I had to do it hot or cold, rain or snow!!!! And my neighborhood sucked to walk in. I had help but it was still so much to deal with even though I do work from home on my own schedule 100% of the time lol it was a huge time suck. And that’s just the bathroom breaks and walks it’s a lot of work taking care of a dog just in general especially a younger one and especially if they’re smart and athletic. It’s still hard to take care of him it takes up most of my free time and I spend an absurd amount of money on him because I want the best for him. so it is a huge loss of freedom and time and a lot of responsibility if you do it right which I’m okay with because I’m a hermit with not much of a life and it does fill the maternal instincts hole. You can literally never be alone if you get a clingy dog I’m typing this from the bath and Benny just stuck his head through the curtain to check on me. I would recommend if you do get a dog to be veryyyyy careful about their personality and needs and try to find an older more couch potato like dog. small dogs are more manageable but they also have tinier bladders so they can’t be left home alone (or wait for you to get out of bed!) for as long without having accidents. The people at the shelters know best so be very straightforward with them about your lifestyle

My dad teases me about how when I was a little kid, my favorite thing to do when I was on the landline phone with somebody—be it a relative or one of my best friends—was to breathlessly describe the things that were in my bedroom so that they could have a mental picture of everything I loved and chose to surround myself with, and where I sat at that moment in time. Perfectly Imperfect reminds me of that so thanks for always listening and for sharing with me too 💌
