this is my favorite live performance video on youtube. something about the perfect harmony, insane reverb, brilliant songwriting, and very fly-on-the-wall camera setup completely makes me feel the magic that was captured in this room. can’t recommend enough.

i have watched this video maybe over 900 times since it was posted - it captures this insane, gradual hypnotic build to this curling crest of the bridge at 5:25 and 5:50, and then maggie’s isolated vocals as that trail out the door with you. the whole crowd is her echoing choir and the so-so video quality makes you feel like you’re getting a runner’s high from an archival tape. i love this performance so much.

hi there! funnily enough I also go to school for songwriting (kinda, I'm a music production major but I'm in songwriting class with all of the songwriting majors and have been writing for a long time as well). if there was one text I'd recommend for working on your songwriting and lyric building process it'd be the exercises in the book "How to Write One Song" by Jeff Tweedy. he basically just shows you how to jumble up your current way of thinking about writing and finding new ways to put words together that you never thought you could do.
P.S. your line about wanting to creating lyrics that move people is very relatable and I understand that want very much and know you probably already are moving people and that as much as we want to be able to write like our heroes as soon as possible, our own just as powerful sound will come eventually with slow and hard work. I'm sure you know this but I thought I would say.
feel free to message me if you'd like to talk songwriting more—happy writing!

if you’ve never explored Neil Young further than his mega hit “Harvest Moon,” I implore you to give his record “After the Gold Rush“ a listen. the wistful, floaty vocals and eternally resonant messages of love, loss, and heartbreak in this album make it seem so very timeless in a way that not only captures this autumn season we’re now entering(happy october!), but also give pangs of nostalgia in a not quite traceable way.
