I was getting off the train and this guy noticed my Van Halen sleeveless tee and was like “cool tank top dude I love Van Halen.” And I was like “thanks man.” And then he was like “do you like Extreme?” (he was wearing a shirt from a band called Extreme). And I said “I’m not too familiar with their music.” And he was like “dude you gotta go listen to their new album, it’s SICK.” And I said “thanks for the rec man” and we fist bumped and it was wholesome. Anyways I got home and listened to Extreme and it wasn’t really my thing.

the same Extreme that released “More than words“? ok that sounds like an unlikely bridge to cross to/from VH but I guess i could work?

Yes, super wholesome and yes, an amazing "recs captured in the wild" story that is actually how most IRL recs work (e.g., someone infers that if you dig VH you will automatically vibe with Extreme and.... well.... that's not always the case). Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt is a technical wizard (I have no idea how he does what he does) and I can respect the work and the incredible talent level even if I don't like it enough to ever actually choose to play it. I'm not a big "check out this solo" guy but you should really check out this solo because it feels like something stolen from the gods. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyduItVYqao

I used to listen to anime openings and endings which got me into J-pop and J-rock, then I somehow got to ichika nito which lead me to, and I still remember that evening when I first listened to falkor by covet in 2019. Life changing moment fr. I listened to it on loop for MONTHS! I also fell into the rabbit hole of math rock with bands like chon, polyphia and shit. I really got into music atp and came across Adam Neely on youtube. It was a video about "bussing". That's where I discovered jazz. Adam's band, the sungazers is an experimental jazz band so I got into that. I was obsessed with their song threshold. Since then I've been listening to lots of other stuff. A big part of my personality in HS was about listening to bands and music that no one else around me had ever even heard of lol.

My @ on here is a line from a Meat Puppets song. My pfp is the cover of a NoMeansNo album. When I was a teenager I thought it was really cool there was a Snowing song that mentioned listening to At The Drive-In. I would show kids in class Lil Ugly Mane and secretly feel smug knowing they were enjoying a song made by a black metal noise guy. If you're lacking in insight and perspective, completely uncharismatic, or just don't know what to say, bringing up shit people like is a good way to trick them into thinking you're worth talking to.

In a solo jamming context I think time-based effects yield the most fun per pedal. With a setup like this you can build a world.
