Saying literally any other word than the r-word

Seeing it waaaaay more in Internet Land lately and it’s just gross. Feeling like I’m back in middle school with how carelessly it’s thrown around. Not only is it offensive, but there are so many other words you can use that fit better. If you have been saying or typing it lately, ask yourself why. If you’ve been typing it but not saying it, you already know you’re being stupid.

HAD SOMEONE TELL ME “PERIOD” WAS SO TWO YEARS AGO

while discussing current linguistic trends in a small group we were talking with an older zoomer and someone around my age and how some words become “trendy” (this is where some red flags starting going off in my head), and how some people use slay to seem “in touch” and just comes off as off putting. the person near my age then said that words like “slay” and “period” were, essentially, trends two years ago. here’s where my sleeper agent was activated. what i would have said was how we (we were all white in the discussion) tend to appropriate and steal words as they are pushed into algorithms and become colloquial speach without acknowledging their sources (which 90% of the time is from queer poc, especially from the ballroom and drag scene). i forgot i’m one of few who actually knows this and tries to subvert my usage of said language for words that aren’t bastardized and stolen from other cultures even though i may be queer myself, that doesn’t give me or others a pass to use words that can sound unintentionally stolen, misused, or worse. just wanted to say that — sorry for not really reaching a “point” with this it’s just a very special cross-interest of mine with linguistics, semantics, and drag/ballroom culture with which i am all interested in :p

Never changing

My dad teases me about how when I was a little kid, my favorite thing to do when I was on the landline phone with somebody—be it a relative or one of my best friends—was to breathlessly describe the things that were in my bedroom so that they could have a mental picture of everything I loved and chose to surround myself with, and where I sat at that moment in time. Perfectly Imperfect reminds me of that so thanks for always listening and for sharing with me too 💌
