I moved to a new city during covid and times were tough here for a while, but this is what worked for me: - befriending your coworkers (sometimes they’re really cool and will become your bff, most of them time they’re fine to occasionally hang w) -being a regular at a coffee shop, bar, or concert/show venue (hit up the familiar faces and they’re likely to introduce you to their crew as well) -bumble bff (kind of the worst but also fun- I met a few of my close friends on here who then introduced me to their friend groups. Mostly great interactions but be weary of some ppl trying to use it as a sly dating tool) -get involved in the community! i host a book club and I play soccer on a local rec team. I’ve met so many people that I would’ve probably never encountered otherwise through Bookclub- don’t be afraid of multigenerational friendships! With soccer, I’ve met such a diverse crowd and it’s encouraged me to attempt to learn Spanish. It’s nice to be able to get a group of ppl together and play/practice when you all have a night free, or go and watch a game! If you’re sporty, you can also invite your new sporty pals out for runs, hikes, or other workout type activities!

First off, ditch the misogynistic crowd like the plague (I’m sure you already know this!). Secondly, every pre-existing friendship group feels out of reach until you become part of it. People naturally will gravitate towards people they’ve known longer and are close with. The only way to become more part of a group is to be with them more. This is true of any friendship or friendship group. The more you show up to it, the more it becomes a solid friendship. When you find a person or a group you get on with, keep meeting up with them. Don’t be embarrassed to ask, everyone was new once! And sometimes you don’t even have to ask, if there’s a specific event they always attend, become a regular, just hang out! Friendship doesn’t just happen like we often think it does, it requires being in the same places, and putting in the same effort repeatedly. friendship seemed easier at school, but that’s because you were in the same place with the same people everyday. Obviously keep an eye out for people or groups who are clearly just not wanting to reciprocate that energy and look for people who are open to it! I struggle with this too, especially as someone who can’t get out all the time, but my most recent example is my friend Ant runs a little acoustic night every wednesday, so I’m starting to go every Wednesday to talk to him behind the bar, and to be around our mutual friends who arent necessarily my friends yet but become more so everything I’m there. royallmonarch has a great rec about community when trying to make a city a home that I’ll try to share in the comments cause it wont seem to let me do it here!

1. Recognize that everyone is looking for connection but nobody wants to be vulnerable first so you have to be the one willing 2. find low cost or free events around your city that meet your interests or that you want to learn more about. Facebook groups are great for this, there’s lots of walking/hiking/running clubs that are super casual and low commitment meant for socializing. Adult rec sports leagues also! you don’t have to be athletic, promise. 3. BE THE PERSON WHO MAKES THE PLAN AND INVITES OTHERS!!! This is by far the most important part. Everyone wants to do something fun but nobody wants to plan it. A good approach is planning something you want to do anyway and asking if they want to join. 4. Feel ok still doing the plan by yourself! Doing new things makes you an interesting person and you will have something new to talk about afterwards

I dropped out of VCU in 2016 after three semesters of failing most of my gen eds, never declaring a major, getting wasted and waking up in punk houses I just submitted a portfolio to Pratt and I’m feeling a lot of complicated feelings but mostly I’m very nervous. I never thought I would go back to school, especially not art school. Hoping to make adolescent Griffin proud Just make a decision and do the thing
