I put it off bc I didn't wanna cry in front of strangers for 90 minutes but I'm so glad I did 😭 I'm so sure it was like the FINAL showing at my local cinema and I'm really, really glad I went <3

This weekend, after some pestering, my local cinema / arts space allowed me to screen + introduce Gremlins 2 (my favourite film of all time) due to its links to an exhibition I’ve been working on in their gallery about breaking the fourth wall. I’ve only ever seen the film on my tv, so it was incredible to see it on the big screen — the storyline works so much better in a cinema and it looked GREAT. Gizmo is so fucking cute. It did also feel like when you show your friend a Funny Video and get nervous about whether or not they’re enjoying it, but on steroids. Every time anyone in the audience laughed I felt so validated — looking around thinking yes… YES… this is the best film to exist, and these strangers… they are my people. I was cackling throughout, the kind of laughter that leaves your cheeks aching afterwards. Everyone clapped during the credits and it sounds like a meme but it’s true. Sometimes being an artist is alright.

Maybe not *the best* but it was certainly one of the more enjoyable movie theater experiences I’ve had. December 2019, went to a 6pm weekday showing on a whim after a friend called me to see if I could go. I knew next to nothing about the plot, didn’t realize the whole thing would be in black and white and screened in an almost-square aspect ratio, yet was enthralled for every second of it. Turned out to be the last movie I saw in theaters pre-pandemic.
