I lived in Massachusetts for 28 years until 1 year ago today when I moved to NYC. I was feeling stagnant and afraid that Iād be there forever if I didnāt make a change. I am happy to say it was one of the best decisions Iāve made. I donāt know if Iāll be here forever but Iāve learned more about myself in 1 year than the last 5 and thatās something Iāll always be thankful for. Iāve made new friends, reconnected with old, gotten a new job, moved apartments, and had an enumerable unforgettable memories.
If you are feeling stuck where you have always been, I recommend making a change because it will be both one of the more challenging and rewarding decisions you make.

I grew up in a suburb in IL and definitely knew I would get out of there and move to the ābig cityā aka Chicago asap. So, I did that, and then the person I was deeply in love with moved to Denver.
Eventually, my partner convinced me to move out of Chicago (kicking and screaming). I honestly did not love Colorado at first, but itās been 7 years it has grown on me and Iām glad I came here. However, we still arenāt sure this is where will stay permanently and always toy around with the idea of living somewhere else.
Itās fun challenging yourself to leave your comfort zone - your network of friends, family, colleagues. Itās nice to have the option of solidarity, as well. I know some people are cool with living in the same place their whole life, but I would have regrets.
The world is such a fun place - get out there and explore! See what calls to you, and lean into that. Once you make a big leap like moving away, you learn who you really are and what youāre capable of. You will meet people and have experiences along the way that you might not have by staying home.

It was a big risk, but I was just laid off from a job I hated and had a fresh breakup on top of that. I had decent prospects as far as potential jobs go, but I wanted to stay in āthe cityā and I felt like I hit a ceiling in San Francisco. Plus, Iād lived there nearly my entire life. Thus, I had a suspicion that if I couldnāt be happy in New York City, then I wouldn't be happy anywhere.
That was a little over six years ago now and Iām the happiest Iāve ever been. A LOT has happened here, and Iāve dealt with a ton of grief, but man, I love it here. I have a great job, made some real friends and community, and am living outwardly as my truest self.
Iām sure I couldāve had this in SF if I tried, and I know that this lifestyle will change inevitably, but I love living in a place with an energy that emanates throughout the city.

Iāve been here for so long the longest Iāve ever lived anywhere and occasionally i feel like maybe itās time to move on and then I go literally anywhere else in the country and Iām so relieved to be back home!!!

I met Erin (@RIOTGRRRL) and Jake (@SLOWDAZZLE) last year after I started using PI.FYIāwe organized a meetup before a Jonathan Richman show and immediately clicked over our shared taste in music and similar sensibilities. We started hanging out a lot and had some great times together. Iāve also gotten to know many of their friends, who are all really cool. Erin and Jake started dating a couple of months after the three of us became friends, but our group chat still pops off. Their friendship has meant a lot to me, especially since moving to NYC in 2023, and I really appreciate having them in my life.
