i wrote about this as the intro for today's editor recs on perfectly imperfect - the first i've done in 8 months - and i think it's the best way to think about recommendation culture and sharing the love.
the ultimate goal of the perfectly imperfect project

It really is! I recognize early on that PI.FYI as a form of mental health therapy that gives you little jots of joy when you scroll through every rec'd. Free of anything fake. Full of the best ingredients we can find in being human beings. Happy birthday!

I’m all in for the gratitude journal part! In a world where we’re often caught between grumbling or fighting for basic rights, having a cozy spot to spill some gratitude feels like a sip of cold water in a desert. And let’s be real, the fact that these recommendations come from the heart and not some sneaky ad? Chef's kiss, no notes. Thank you Tyler, and happy birthday.

This is pretty much exactly as I see it Tyler. In a way it's analogous to how I thought about Google reviews when I was working there -- post a five star review if you want to help that business and well and truly were grateful to experience/learn about them. Go talk to the owner privately if you have constructive feedback. Don't be a Karen. Don't ask for the manager. Get out of your own way. :)

earlier this year i set out to do some kind of Caveh-esq experiment of writing one recommendation every single day, with the goal of building some kind of weird portrait of myself in public. it's almost like journaling. i look back on 3 years of writing recommendations for Perfectly Imperfect and see myself changing in real time. my tastes & sensibilities morphing as i age, move to different places, lose my job, etc.
the newsletter was called T-Recs (clever right?) and i stopped after 4 months or so. maybe i got scared of the 1,000 subscribers or something. it felt too high stakes.
however, it feels natural on this site. I can write about liking fridges with magnets & old christmas cards, or my favorite album of all time, and it somehow all works?
so, my 1 rec a day journey continues...

I love to share things that are good with others, I’m the gatekeeper only because I hold open the gate. I’m quite specific with my tastes and I think that I’m good at hunting for good, useful, and beautiful things. I consider the things I own and think a lot about the things I consume and the way I interact with the world so I like sharing that with others. I also really like seeing what other people like and use and taking advice from them. The recommendations of other people are always so much better than just stab in the dark searching for things. Plus, Community based on shared tastes and exchanging recommendations feels like the opposite of the individualistic self-promotion-ness of other social media. When I shared my own music, for example, it meant a lot more to get genuine positive comments from a small amount of people whose tastes I trust, than a ton of random likes from strangers. It also nicely doubles as a sort of gratitude excercise, reminding me of things I enjoy and to notice the things that make my life easier or more beautiful.

I always feel a bit false when asked to curate recommendations or think of my favorites. While it's good to take stock of what was truly enriching, it's also nice to think the things I'm actually doing & consuming day in and day out are worthwhile. And if they're not worth sharing, maybe there are changes to be made.

tomorrow PI.FYI launches to the public
this project is the result of thousands of hours spent coding everything from scratch after I got laid off six months ago
no thiel-bucks or weirdo outsider money, just a pure desire to make something fun and true to Perfectly Imperfect’s day one goal of helping people find new things from real human beings, not algorithms or AI
a pure labor of love that I’ve been quietly plotting for two years and it’s completely self-funded from my (rapidly) dwindling savings account
so thank you for coming along for this weird ride 🫶 let's see where it goes
