This is like KIDS meets Bridge to Terabithia but for grimey punk-Latinos with extra swag in their cup.
Number one: their fucking style. I havent seen this much swag in a movie ever in my life. The music, the fashion, the dancing, the graffiti, the way they speak, the HAIR. Its just oozing and exploding with ineffable "i dont give a fuck" - ness. Literally no other thing ive ever seen can relate to the swag in this movie. There's just style everywhere. Your boyfriend (or girlfriend or nongenderconformingpartner) will never be this cool in their life.
Number two: alt-mexican culture. I love mexican culture to begin with. I'm costa rican, and a lot of costa rican culture is influenced by mexican style music and way of dress, so immediately the classical influences resonate like catholic religious imagery and bright colors. On top of that, i am also Colombian and they are pulling and remixing Colombian cumbia but in a really special way. In monterrey mexico, colombian cumbia had such a deep impact on their community that they started calling themselves Kolombianos. Like an homage to the colombian culture that influenced their lives in music, fashion, and self expression. Additionally, they're pulling inspo from american cholo culture from like Houston and Cali. Baggy clothes, football jerseys, chuck taylors, bandanas. Its like a blend of so many different FLY cultures that melted together there in Monterrey, MX. puro simbolo star, loco.
Number three: the story they tell. This movie highlights the experience of one young man as he experienced life at 17 years old. Without spoiling too much of the movie, we navigate themes of violence, immigration, societal outcasting, and a coming of age. Its truly a beautiful watch.
Please watch this (twice). Thank god for punk-latinos.

Been waiting for this one to drop for forever! Thought it wouldnโt meet my expectations like the last few movies i really wanted to like but this definitely surpassed it. My favorite part is that the main character *spoiler alert* got a happy ending! *spoiler alert end*
Charming movie about a struggling artist trying to not get deported while putting up with stereotypical, rich, white artists in order to achieve their dream. Has small moments of absurdity but nothing too crazy plus the performances are all cool. short and sweet and funny!

cassius green, upon getting a new job as a telemarketer, is encouraged to use his "white voice" in order to do well at the company. as he continues mounting successes, he eventually gets promoted to "power caller," getting caught in the middle between his fellow workers trying to unionize and the higher ups trying to further drive a wedge between them
absolutely insane, stellar performances from the entire cast, particularly lakeith stanfield and david cross as cassius. you may have been spoiled for one of the twists in this movie, watch it anyway. it will be an absolute roller coaster regardless
i'm genuinely surprised this didn't massively blow up. i know i'm biased bc i love absurdism and it's not for everybody, but especially in light of a lot of anticapitalist/eat the rich media that made waves in recent years (parasite, the menu, triangle of sadness, etc.) it feels like the only reason this one didn't reach more ubiquity is that boots riley probably didn't want to play ball with the "hollywood" of it all (related, u should watch maggie mae fish's video essay on the movie as well lol)
anyways, this movie is great, one of my all time favorites. peep "i'm a virgo" too if you wanna watch more of riley's stuff

A mostly lighthearted comedy-drama about a family in 1973 Bedstuy Brooklyn just tryna get through life and make ends meet. The momโs basically the only one tryna wrangle a whole house of rascal kids while the dad stays in the aspiring musician realm, unwilling to get a stable job to pay the bills.
Lots of fun eccentric characters and happenings, not really a plot or anything, itโs just catching the vibe and spending time with this family. Great authentic style, great music, great acting.
Doesnโt get depressing till the last 30 mins or so. Based on Spike Leeโs upbringing with his brothers and sisters (I think they helped him write it too).

Shes so quiet and shy, weโve had every class together so far over 3 semesters and barely ever spoke aside from her saying happy Valentineโs Day to me in February. Fast forward to this semester I sit next to her first day of finance class and decide to Be friendly and chat. Sheโs quiet but cool so I get her number, offer to maybe study later in the semester (which is a mild courtesy as I was lowkey just gaining new allies in the class to assist with cheating).
But once I started texting her about class we just never stopped texting, and now I think weโre actively flirting? Shes into dark romance novels? she brought one of her novels to class yesterday and after class she snuggled up against me in the hallway and made me read a (very graphic) page about a girl getting fucked by a gun? This chick is nuts. Am I catching feelings?
