sorry I know it’s cringe but I love the 8 hour Peter Jackson *** documentary get back . I watched it over a Xmas with my family and we all adored it . actually just a really beautiful series about a group of young guys outgrowing each other. Highlights are : George’s outfits, Paul introducing Linda McCartney as A ‘cameraman’, silent footage of yoko Ono and Linda chatting , billy Preston arriving and changing the game. Maybe it’s because i love the Beatles, maybe it’s cuz Paul McCartney looks like my dad, maybe it’s the ridiculously lovely colour grade but … get back 4EVR!!!! *** I ORIGINALLY WROTE PERCY JACKSON RIP

Kind of an unconventional pick, but: I loved the TV show LOST as a teenager, and getting to revisit some of those feelings through this documentary was special.

Is my favourite documentary in the world. Stylishly directed in black and white by Bennett Miller (best known for Capote and Moneyball), it circles around the magnificently exuberant existence of the playwright turned apple city tour guide Timothy "Speed" Levitch as he muses on the city of NY on and off his double decker bus. I have a tendency to let my frustrations of the world to clench my muscles up and this is the film equivalent of a lump of mdma to melt my heart back open again with every rewatch. A poet can have an intense love affair with a bridge and a great poet can word it in a way that convinces you that they're not mad; or that even if they are, they are mad in the exact way life is supposed to be experienced in the first place. A must-see for anyone who holds a warm spot in their heart for the insomniac city, or at least what it once could be through the eyes of an intensely intuned romantic eccentric.

scala (2023) is a brilliant documentary about the scala cinema in london, and how it influenced a whole generation of creatives. absolutely brilliant film and made me reconsider how i look at movies generally. while we watched (2022) is the story of a ravish kumar, an indian news reporter trying to fight against the misinformation put out by the indian media and the pressure put on him by the government. squaring the circle (2022) is a really fun documentary if you’re into your classic rock. all about the group that designed half of the famous album covers from that period, and the story behind the group and the art. and lastly i’ll say the sparks brothers (2021). just a brilliant display of how filmmaking can be used in a documentary. again, loads of fun, really beautiful shots, amazing lineup of interviewees. i hadn’t even heard of sparks before watching this but i was a big fan by the end.
