I really can't affirm this enough
I feel like a whole book could be written about this one song
It's basically Pavement sending up the (then current) rock 'n roll status quo -- punk has intruded on your hippie-era Fillmore ideal, it's all kind of dead to us including even what WE are doing
I always interpreted the "I need to sleep" section as something of an homage to the Beatles' "I'm So Tired"
There's no real structure to the song; no choruses, just kind of an extended seven minute jam into oblivion
And its last line -- "Their throats are filled with" -- is an unfinished thought, ironic in that this track about how rock ‘n’ roll is finished ends unfinished.
I routinely hold this up as Exhibit A when people ask (and they certainly have asked given how often I wrote about them) why Pavement is the godhead.

coreydubrowa absolutely! i agree with all points though i interpret the "i need to sleep" lines as an admonition of the immense pressure of that hippie-era Fillmore ideal and how it isn't healthy in any way,—there needs to be a break, and this idea builds off of their claim as "the last psychadelic band" in Unfair, the last couple lines of Range Life about feeling distant from the other 90s rock bands, and y'know honestly the whole rest of the album up until this point,—Crooked Rain in general is a pretty pointed album at the end of the day, like a javelin thrown in the heart of whatever the hell "rock" as a moniker means
