…but people say the new Emily Wilson translation is great. Source: even more embarrassing that I’m dating a Classics PhD and still haven’t done it.

llq whoa you met!? That’s very cool, she says not having read it. I should really make that happen soon (for my former cats’ honor if anything!).

tortitude oh and that’ll be good if it’s Fagles. I did manage his Aeneid in high school Latin and I remember really enjoying it.

tortitude i studied augustus and homeric texts in my highschool and got super into it so i was like i neeeed to do the big three! i think reading the aeneid would be so much more fun if i got the odyssey style stuff in it better. we could so do a lil odyssey book club and start reading it together!! i'm procrastinating so bad with it!

such a good translation. it's modern but not in a gauche way, and Wilson's is the first version I've read that makes it really feel alive, accessible and yet still ancient. You can feel how much love she has for this awful tragic narrative which makes her such a good guide through the story

I prefer Emily Wilson’s Odyssey and it was the edition I taught from when I taught the Odyssey for a university class— her language is accessible/readable and very intentional, and I think she approaches classics through a womanist lens that really makes her edition stand out. But it depends on what you’re looking for; some author prioritize maintaining style/form in translation, others are literal, and it depends on what you prefer to read.
