Chatted with "Links I Would GChat You If We Were Friends" author Caitlin Dewey about the emo-to-journalism pipeline, leaving Substack's CEO on read, Canadian radio, and where we tf go from here. If you're interested in newsletters and the economy around them I highly recommend this, I found the convo so compelling I'm not just saying that

an iconic place to dump your thoughts, ideas, and ramblings onto a group of friends who actively signed up to hear about your shit every few weeks. the best part is it's illegal under federal law for anybody to ever unsubscribe, so you've got ppl in a chokehold for infinity and beyond <333 just wrote something about the age of early aughts social media, Kyle Chayka's latest book Filterworld, and where we go from here (PI.FYI is obvi mentioned).

Today's newsletter (a daily roundup of retail and business news) is how I landed here. I discovered Emily's Substack after she included an investigative article on Aritzia I co-reported for Business Insider. It's my new daily obsession, very 'me coded' according to friends. I'm forcing everyone to subscribe so that I have less explaining to do in group chats.

I've been rabbitholing in Substacks the last few days and came across some really cool/niche ones like 'Laid off' - it features interviews with people who are laid off. The intention behind the newsletter, Melanie said, is to destigmatize an experience a lot of people don’t feel comfortable talking about. Cos there’s still a lot of shame around. Sad but true - esp for those who have not only invested in their career but also embedded their identities in it. "Building a career and a relationship takes time, and I had devoted a lot of time to both of them, and not a lot to myself," really spoke to me.

What happens behind the wheel is, frankly, none of my business. I'd rather spend my time picking songs/sipping coffee/taking in the scene. Driving is so pedestrian.

I swear to god this shit is too powerful. It doesn’t always work out the way I hoped but the win/loss ratio is definitely in my favour. We are social creatures. We like helping each other. Just do it. Ask me for something if you want. Who knows what I’ll say.
