all the baristas know your order and compliment your nails and an 81-year-old man who’s been around the neighborhood way longer than the coffee shop says “fuggedaboutit” unironically, gives you life advice, calls your ex a “schmuck,” and says “be good, kid” when you leave. cannot recommend enough.

You can built equity with your local shop. Idk if that’s a lost art today but when you watch the movies where a guy walks into a store and everyone working knows him and knows his order and he knows about their lives — THAT IS A REAL THING THAT CAN HAPPEN! My wife & I live around the corner from a coffee shop / bakery we love and we’ve made it a habit to frequent it 3-4 times a week. We order coffee and pastries and we always always always tip. We know the staff because we see them so often, we refer to them by name, and we make sure to be conversational when the moment allows it. This was something we do out of just human decency. But what we learned with time was that the staff took notice of the culmination of those things. They’d remember our orders. They’d flag us down to the front of the line when it was busy. Most days by the time I get to the counter, my order is packed and rung up. Some nights when we go for dinner (incredible pizza & pasta), we get asked if we want to take home pastries or bread for free. Some days an extra croissant appears in my bag. On days when they try new items, guess who gets asked for their opinion? We don’t do these things for special treatment, but we’ve realized that special treatment often happens because of those things. You can build equity with a business by (1) committing to frequent it often, (2) by tipping appropriately and often, and (3) by treating the staff like humans as opposed to workers. It’s a 10/10 experience. Plus it makes you feel so cool when there’s a long ass line and you walk in and everyone’s like “LOOK IT’S MARIANO! HEY MAN! WE HAVE YOUR ORDER READY OVER HERE!”
