Living in cities for 10+ years has made me think all I like are cities. Going to Alaska with my family reminded me how beautiful the land is and reminded me that I need to figure out a way to get out more when I get back to NYC

🌇I’ve been here for so long the longest I’ve ever lived anywhere and occasionally i feel like maybe it’s time to move on and then I go literally anywhere else in the country and I’m so relieved to be back home!!!

🏡Leaving the comforts of the familiar is not easy, often comes with great sacrifice, isolation, discomfort, anonymity, and sense of disconnect. It takes a lot of courage and momentum to start over. I left my hometown when I was 18 and mostly never looked back. Sometimes there's no rationale why a place isn't right for you. Sometimes you spend so much time on the run, you wonder if it's you you're running from. But sometimes you run far enough to find yourself in new territory that finally feels like home. I have nothing but love for where I come from fr and romanticize all the best parts of it, visiting from time-to-time with nostalgic, poetic glee. But sooner or later that feeling creeps in and it's just so obvious that I cannot stay. I don't belong and it's not in an angsty teenage way, but in a real, factual, this is not where I serve out my purpose kind of way. The world is a big big place. Travel, explore, rent, sublet, gig, study, improvise. Find your coordinates, do whatever it takes. Cities have a soul and you deserve to find yours.

😃sometimes you have to ground yourself. Get out of that superficial city you lie to yourself as you refer to it as ”home.” Leave the instagram likes and 4am parties behind and go see your family. They miss you. Go repair that relationship with your father/mother, visit your old high school - drink a beer and stargaze with your childhood friends as you reminisce on how good you had it back then. Plot. Make your plots. Come back to said wretched city ready to capitolize. Or don’t. Move to a different city - or never leave home. Don’t be afraid of comfort, don’t get too used to it either.

I met Erin (@RIOTGRRRL) and Jake (@SLOWDAZZLE) last year after I started using PI.FYI—we organized a meetup before a Jonathan Richman show and immediately clicked over our shared taste in music and similar sensibilities. We started hanging out a lot and had some great times together. I’ve also gotten to know many of their friends, who are all really cool. Erin and Jake started dating a couple of months after the three of us became friends, but our group chat still pops off. Their friendship has meant a lot to me, especially since moving to NYC in 2023, and I really appreciate having them in my life.
