I started doing this intentionally now and the reverse psychology of it all actually helps to ground me in real time out in the world doing whatever i'm doing outside of the house. Requires some thinking ahead but not much. You don't need apple pay; just bring your wallet. Once your phone dies let the world unravel at your fingertips. This trick works really well with laptops too. I don't bring my computer charger anymore when I leave the house to work because if I know my laptop will probably die within the next 2-3 hours I can fully lock in and work against the clock. I can actually send the emails I need to send and write what I planned to write with tab surfing and frequent news feed refreshing. I'm an Aries so obviously there is a competitive undertone here that's driving me even if it's just with myself

similar experience BUT with a chaotic twist I fell v behind on bills (still am lolz) and got my cell service shut off… no one could contact me if I wasn’t connected to WiFi Felt like I was living on the edge

recent mental health booster I stumbled onto when my phone ended up dead one morning, so I went to a cafe near me to journal/read for a couple hours without it. there were so many times I phantom reached for my it like the addict I am, very glad I couldn’t that day or else stupid things would have been done. I was forced to sit in the moment and process my thoughts without being able to actively do anything or contact anyone. did it the next day purposely and I had such a good day. leave your phone at home sometimes when you’re bumming around your area doing small errands! also forces you to learn your surroundings rather than relying on google maps.

I like to let my phone die— I often don’t charge it overnight, and try not to plug it in during the day. If you’re able to access work/school through only your laptop, let your phone die, or leave it on the plug in another room. I also delete most apps from my phone for periods of weeks, and minimally use social media— if this works for you, it can feel very liberating, and makes me feel much less constantly accessible (which I think is a good thing). Something that helps me is thinking about the flattening of correspondence; before social media, if you wanted to communicate to a friend, it was one-on-one— you might write a letter, or call, or email, but what you were doing was conversational and relational. When we use social media, we flatten a lot of individual relationships into one relationship between us and our “audience.” Instead of sharing a thought or comment intended for one person, and designed for them to reply and continue the correspondence, we put out press releases on our own lives: “this is what I had for breakfast,” “this is a meme about my mental health,” and we become part of a passive audience in our friend’s lives. We end up feeling like we’ve just seen our friends, because we’re “viewing” their lives, but actually apps leave us feeling very isolated and anti-social. Try deleting your most used social media apps, and also schedule a walk/movie night/coffee with a friend. Outside of radical deletion, pick an audio book to listen to, and pair it with a hands on/tactile activity: you could load the dishwasher, or draw, or try embroidery.

I’ve been incorporating this small habit when I need to run a low stakes errand like going to yoga or grocery shopping, or really any other task I need to do throughout the day and I feel comfortable enough to go to and fro on my vibes alone. I advise you to do it at your own discretion and always let a pal know if you’re going phoneless.

nothing short of a spiritual advisor. here he is illuminating a truth I believe we all feel to be true when down and out but often forget/neglect out of allegiance to self-pity or the traps of misery. this could almost read as a hallmark card quote, but it exists elsewhere...so by default, it is its own thing. I do not mean to be sentimental about suffering— but people who cannot suffer can never grow up, can never discover who they are.
