i feel like it’s this constant debate but the thing is? there’s millions of artists/musicians/etc out there, so i find when you want to hold on so tightly to someone, you’re closing yourself off from other artists that could be similar or way cooler but not a terrible person obviously there’s a distinction between a faux pas, mistakes before growth, or being deeply consistently horrible, but i absolutely think that’s a distinction worth making… we only have so much time on this earth, and our time to consume art and music and film and literature is fleeting, so i’d rather spend it on the works of people who have earnestly made the world a more beautiful place and exploring art to find those !

i feel like internet culture has conditioned me to feel like I always have to have an opinion on something. And as a result I’m always judging an artist work as good or bad based on my own individual taste. But it’s absolutely bonkers to think that I’m the target audience for everything an artist that I like makes. Sometime, the song or the painting or the movie ect. Is not for me, and that’s fine. It doesn’t mean what they are producing is bad, it simply means it’s not resonating with me. And thinking this way allows me to respect an artists decision to experiment with their art form a bit more. Because I can only imagine how constricting it must be to feel pressure to create just for people approval and consumption. Maybe sometime the artists just wants to put out a funny little song that makes them happy. And sure, I may not get it and it may not be something I want to listen to, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad, just that it’s not for me, and that’s okay.

just had an epiphany about how everyone seeks something different from art, how we all perceive it based on who we are as individuals … for the longest time in art/film school i’ve been scared to pursue the art i want out of fear that it will turn out very bad. but i hope we make art anyway despite that fear, as long as it sustains ourselves and the people who matter. i hope we all get to freely make “bad” art 🫂

This is especially important if you are an artist or aspiring artist but it’s also just a good way to enjoy life and avoid getting hurt. Where it is true that our culture privileges youth and beauty and instant gratification, it is more true that meaningful, well-made and carefully considered art (and decisions) eventually rise to the top. But to make something well and carefully, one must be patient. This can mean putting the project, question or concern away for a while to return to it with fresh eyes. Or finding a group of like-minded individuals you can trust to give you honest feedback. Whatever your path to patience just remember that when all is said and done, it’s better to produce work or life choices that you know, without a shadow of a doubt, reflect your personal best, rather than rush and regret it later.

being traditionally cool is really quite boring and iterative, and it’s actually very cool and sexy to geek out about something you like or share bits of knowledge on a topic you’re passionate about

i had it for a little over a year until i was like wow this is actually terrible! i genuinely think it has negatively impacted society by ruining people’s attention spans, having a horrific algorithm, and most of all by the most mind-numbing or outright harmful trends - fake words that people now use IRL (“unalive”), trad wife tiktok, shein hauls, body-focused fitness vids that encourage fatphobia and unhealthy habits, shallow political/feminist theory and queer discourse, “alpha male” podcaster tiktok, encouraging overconsumption in general, trends ruining local spots or niche things… the list goes on
