The descriptions of smells in books is something that always sticks out to me. In Don Quixote, for example, itās the chivalric scent of ambergris; in One Hundred Years of Solitude, the smell of Colonel Aureliano BuendĆaās lavender-perfumed moustache lingers on the page. I saw a comment online where a european person was like āwhat do you mean Americans can smell that itās going to rain??ā which made me think of this lol. I canāt believe not everyone can smell when itās going to rain.
So mine first and maybe someone else also smells this: I can smell when someone has been to the beach, which some may say would be obvious but itās not. I live and grew up on an island thatās not even a mile wide so I know what Iām smelling is different, itās not the smell of the actual water, seaweed, sand or anything; thereās this specific smell thatās almost like melons when someone has been at the beach but not even necessarily in the water. Especially if they were walking on the beach in the morning. I put together what I was really smelling eventually because say I would be working inside all day and someone would come in to where I work, before I knew what I was smelling I would be like āoh my gosh, what perfume are you wearing, it smells kind of melon-y?ā and I would get something along the lines of āIām not wearing anyā or āI didnāt put perfume on because all I did this morning was walk on the beach.ā Sometimes some lady would look a very confused over it even because it was like she had no idea what smell I was talking about and knew she didnāt put on perfume lol.

I love smelling things in the forest or at the beach. It literally makes me feel high sometimes because it is so pleasurable. I think the sense of smell is supremely underrated and underdeveloped in humans. I really feel like an animal most of the time, so I feel like itās important to rely on/enjoy my sense of smell like any other form of stimulation/data-collecting. I also have a VERY keen sense of smell.

i feel like internet culture has conditioned me to feel like I always have to have an opinion on something. And as a result Iām always judging an artist work as good or bad based on my own individual taste. But itās absolutely bonkers to think that Iām the target audience for everything an artist that I like makes. Sometime, the song or the painting or the movie ect. Is not for me, and thatās fine. It doesnāt mean what they are producing is bad, it simply means itās not resonating with me. And thinking this way allows me to respect an artists decision to experiment with their art form a bit more. Because I can only imagine how constricting it must be to feel pressure to create just for people approval and consumption. Maybe sometime the artists just wants to put out a funny little song that makes them happy. And sure, I may not get it and it may not be something I want to listen to, but that doesnāt mean itās bad, just that itās not for me, and thatās okay.

Obviously there is a privilege in being able to vacation for extended periods of time. But there is something charming about going off the beaten path in a foreign country and just setting up camp for awhile. Short enough to where is not as daunting as moving to a new county. But long enough that you get really acquainted with the place, develop and routine, and have regular spots.
I just did a month in Salvador, Brazil and it was beautiful. I was my first solo trip too, so there was some growing pains, but ultimately I learned so much in the process and caught some unreal sunsets
