I couldn't choose between this and Pod by The Breeders but I linked pod in my last rec, so hereās PJ Harvey. I used this record (especially 50 ft queenie) as production refeeence for the drums on my record. Albini really was the master of drum sound. Heartbroken.

For me Steve Albini drum sounds are the best drum sounds. there are endless āhow to produce drums like Albiniā articles, but no one else can was doing it like him imo. You think of Nirvanaās Scentless Apprentice, and you can feel that super specific drum sound. That distinctive snare. He somehow makes drums sound really immediate and tight while also spacious. My favourite combination is when Albini produces Rob Ellis on PJ Harveyās Rid of Me. Rob Ellis is one of my favourite drummers and the combo is killer. Just LISTEN to the drums on 50ft Queenie (linked).

Iām not sure which other artists have released their best work on their 5th studio album (after four priors that were consistently and increasingly amazing)
It may not be her āNew York albumā per se given its recording provenance at Linford Manor in Milton Keynes
But it is damn sure *MY* PJ Harvey NYC album
I also love the nod to Patti Smith (she was always lurking there, just below the surface) on āHorses In My Dreamsā š¤
