Starbucks...fyi

Upper East Side: 63rd and Lex - $8.22 for a Medium Iced Soy Chai with a Shot of Espresso. I’m not going to say dirty chai. And I’m not going to memorize the Starbucks specific cup sizes. There was some trouble ringing me up, and I had to confirm that the milk in my latte was soy milk because it looked like it was curdling... Then I tasted it and it was so sweet - too sweet? And I was like… does this even have a shot of espresso in it (emphasis on the dirty chai)? She said yes, but she’ll give me another shot. Her can-do attitude made up for the curdling milk incident.  Midtown: 35th and 8th - Dont even get me started LOL. Like actually don’t go to this Starbucks. They’re always out of what you want and the line is always so weird.  Near Penn Station: 35th and 7th - Objectively fine. Drinks slightly more expensive probably because it’s near Penn Station. One time I saw a man here exhibit the most deranged behavior where he asked for a stirrer thing for his hot coffee and then he used it, spilled a bit of his drink and just threw it on the counter and walked out. East Hampton: 39 Main St - Wait times approx. 15 minutes even for something as simple as a Oat Cold Brew. Seems to be a very laissez faire attitude type of institution. Lots of chatting. The employees are obsessed with spelling names correctly here. It doesn’t really matter, does it? Bridgehampton: 2488 Montauk Hwy - There’s something about this one that just gives mobile order vibes. Spacious and nice atmosphere but my Soy Iced Americano was way too watery and made me question wether or not I wanted to continue to get Americanos instead of Lattes (Megan told me they are cheeper). Southampton: 29 Hampton Road - This didn’t exist when I was growing up. When they built it, there was a lot of commotion and it was very controversial in the sense that people fully boycotted it. I felt no way about it (I’m someone who supports the Silver Lake Salt & Straw even though people have literally berated me while minding my own business eating ice cream on Sunset, but whatever Gentrification). This location is fine overall, anything is better than the East Hampton location at this point. Newark Airport: Terminal A - Pleasantly surprised by the design here. Quick service considering it’s an airport. $11.02 for a large Iced Soy Chai with a shot of Espresso and two Kind bars (when you’re getting a large, you might as well spend big and get two bars). Silver Lake: 2560 Glendale Boulevard Placita - This is my neighborhood Starbucks. People complain about this parking lot. I don’t. Nothing bad to say. Love all the people who work here. One time, the man serving me asked if I was an artist — and said he could just tell. $7.45 with tip for a Large Soy Ice Chai Latte with a shot of Espresso. Echo Park: 1400 Glendale - Love the idea of a drive through as someone who is from NYC but this Starbucks is basically like entering the loony bin. Echo Park: 2134 Sunset - RESERVE next to the Chipotle and The Habit. Big parking lot, pretty nice inside- but I would never ever go here because the vibe really weirds me out. I don’t know why. Go to the drive through down the street next to Vons. Los Feliz: 2138 Hillhurst - I’ll frequent this one every once in a while, when I’m working at Kelsi’s house. It’s nice inside because it used to be a RESERVE before it was hit with hard times and now it’s just a normal Starbucks (even though the employees still wear fedoras). Los Feliz: 1700 N Vermont Ave - Shares the building and parking lot with a US Bank. If you park in one of the US Bank spots, you will get yelled at. Mobile order is behind the counter so you have to ask for your drink and that isn’t ideal. USC: 642 W 34th - This was my college Starbucks (literally in the lobby of my Freshman dorm) so I’m giving it an honorable mention for being a “familiar face” so to speak when I moved to LA. Fairfax: Farmers Market, 6333 W 3rd - I mean, why would anyone expect the Starbucks at The Grove to be a good location… It’s way too packed and the low ceilings and wet air make me uncomfortable. Tim ordered a lemonade with three shots of espresso and that just made me feel weird about the whole situation. Hollywood: 859 N Highland Ave - Weird shack style location with no inside. You can walk up to the window (but that’s weird) so basically it’s drive through only. The line is always huge - and for what? Mid City: 5353 Wilshire Blvd - It’s at the bottom floor of the Boulevard Apartment building on Wilshire. I used to frequent this Starbucks. You park in the guest parking of the apartments and have to go through a door in the garage that was always wet for some reason or you can walk around the front (but that’s annoying). Mid City: 5757 Wilshire UNIT 106 - It’s next to LACMA in a strip mall that I have no clue how you get into, would never go here… I guess if you’re desperate you can figure it out. West Hollywood: 7624 Melrose Ave - The one next to the Urban Outfitters (classic). It has a really nice outdoor zone, pretty spacious inside but always way too many people in it.

This is the best thing you can receive and the best thing you can give to another. Free starbucks is luxury. It is elite. People will notice the cup you are holding and respect you for acting regular for once in your life.

Process and experience

So vulnerable, I have to be sincere. European and American art galleries historically are not only promoters of great art, they are creators of markets. That may be where you could shift focus. Your worth is that you are young, eating rat, living a life of passion, filth, messiness, body horror (per my comment on such) unique and unknown to those with money. They crave you, not for your art. That's worthless to them. The art, as photographs per Sontag in my other rec, is simply a receipt that they owned a piece of your lifestyle for a moment. No one who will buy your art will likely give a fuck about your art. Stop seeking those. Find the Glengarry Glen Ross customers seeking life, escape from drudgery, a need to prove something to themselves. Let your art be that for them. Enough bs theory, now for implementation. You won't sell your art, but you can sell the frustration, bloodsweattears, dedication, sacrifice that drips from your post. You can do so by simultaneously reminding yourself you are not creating ART but CREATING art. Your work and worth is not on a canvas. It's not the art. It's in you, the artist.

Intervene, ignorantly

A model friend/client and I stepped out from dinner for a smoke and were having a tipsy discussion about an issue with her company. Some doorman came up to tell us to move because we were blocking the entrance, which we weren't. I was irked, but my friend guessed he likely stereotyped her being in a lover's quarrel. Irked for a different reason, I called out, "Dude, we're discussing business! She's my boss!" In hindsight, I appreciated how he handled what he mistook as a domestic dispute by creating a false diversion to redirect our attention. Most people get involved in others' drama because they think they know better. Most people don't because they're insecure they're misunderstanding. He was appropriately in between.
