Incredible slice-of-life,coming-of-age assassin films with incredible dialogue and humor and phenomenal action scenes. Feels like a combination of Ghost World, Ghost Dog, and Tokyo Drifter.
Great movie by Ryusuke Hamaguchi (director of Drive My Car). Lean, subtle, and effective. It's like a precursor to Joachim Trier's The Worst Person in the World, but very Japanese. Poses a provocative question about why we choose to love the people we love, and brings the protagonist up to make a breathtaking and appalling decision.
A chilling & hyper-stereotyped thriller that captures the zeitgeist of our modern times. As a literal entire city spirals into chaos following a massive cyber leak, the film explores themes such as privacy, self-determination, and the repercussions of talking shit w bestie.
One of my favourite films released in the last few years is JUNK HEAD. A Japanese stop-motion film with a perfect balance of cute/gory, it's a sci-fi action story with a crazy, crazy plot. I cannot think of a way to summarise it besides this list of words:
* Robots
* Mutants
* Monsters
* Dystopia
* Heart-warming
* Gross
* Unique The whole thing was made by a single person in a span of seven years! It was originally released a number of years ago, but got an international release more recently. The sequel is currently in production! You should be able to get a dvd of the film from the distributor... But if that turns out to be a little difficult, I recommend taking a quick look on YouTube ;)
After travelling for 6 weeks, love listening to all the ambient whirrs of my home in the morning; the heat pump, the kettle, the electric toothbrush--all white noise, but somehow a cozier, warmer white noise.
