this entire album is incredibly bonkers and sort of like being high on stimulants while being dragged around town by someone else who is even higher on stimulants…
but THIS song in particular has this feeling of a bombastic live show in hell being MC’d by a sports announcer from the 1920s

From “Dots and Loops” which is an all timer for me.
A song about trompe l’oeil artwork (“trick the eye”) that maybe isn’t about that at all - at face value, it seems more likely to be about seeking simultaneously to deceive while being open and honest about the fact you are deceiving… an “it’s complicated” relationship song?
If you dig Stereolab, try to dig up some McCarthy tunes, Tim Gane’s first band (featured on the old C86 cassette which is also worth tracking down although you can hear it in full on the YouTubes). The chaotic laughter at the end gets me every time, conjuring the image of someone completely losing control.
To me, the track symbolizes the yin/yang nature of beauty and chaos.
The band members have also acknowledged that the song was inspired by their former bandmate Syd Barrett’s mental health decline.
